OT Utility not found
« on: February 10, 2008, 05:49:17 PM »
I had a serious Failure on my G4, 933, OS 10.3.9 and my external Hard Drive OS 10.3.2. Both show OT utility not found. I'm assuming OT means Open Transport?. Iv' e searched for weeks thru Forums, Apple help, and  service Technicians to no avail.
I would like to find it and restore it or install on my two hardrives. Any clue or help would be greatly appreciated.

                                                             Thank you

Mike, Open Transport isn't used in OS X. Do you have Classic installed? See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Transport

I don't know what is really missing - have you tried doing an archive and install? And why are you still running 10.3.2 on the external drive (just curious...)?

When exactly do you get this message? What do you mean when you say "serious failure" - what failed? What is/isn't working now? More info needed methinks, in order to track down this issue.

I've had a look on my Mac and there is nothing called "OT..."

Thank you Paddy for your response. There must be something wrong with my classic. I have classic and OS 9.2.2  also i can't recover OutLook Express 5.0.2, it says i don't have enough Memory. I have 60.67GB of free memory and 768Mb of Ram, on my internal drive.
On my exteral drive 60.66GB, Maybe i need more Ram?.
Heres what happened. My hardrive started to fail, this dummy put my info on a external laptop HD. Doesn't know how he did it.
In so duing somehow my internal HD with 10.3.9 went to 10.3.2 on the Ext HD. That took 8 weeks. Did a clean install of 10.3.
  9. Hardrive failed again. New HD with 10.3.9.
That started to have issues. Did aclean install with 10.3.9.
Issues now OT cannot be foundin USB Printer Sharing,Microsoft component Lib,Ticker Tool 2.5.4,maybe others.

Can't recover OutLook Express 5.0.2 not enough memory.
My Experience has been 2 to 3 years throw them away, before troubles begin.

There are only 5 Shops in my county all 20 to 25 miles away , none are to good, no help from Apple for them.
Theres more but why bother. 5 different Macs in 7 Years. Not a good record. Spent up to $500 on each of them!.

It's not clear from your message precisely what the problem is, but it does seem you have some confusion going on. You do not have 60.67 GB free memory on your hard drive; memory and hard drive are different things that are not related to each other. RAM is memory; hard drive space is not memory.

Take a deep breath and see if you can explain precisely, in detail, what is wrong. You talk about Outlook Express and you talk about OT, but it is not clear what messages you are seeing, or when.

So: Wat, exactly, are you doing, and what is happening? Try to give as much detail as possible, as in "I double click my icon for Outlook Express. Outlook Express runs. I click on the Get New Mail button. An error message appears that reads "Could not get mail because...". Then Outlook Express quits." Or whatever.

Please describe exactly what you are doing when you see a message that mentions OT, and tell us word for word what the message says. Describe any widows or dialog boxes you see on your screen.

Mike, hard drive failures aren't due to the fact that you're using a Mac - unfortunately hard drives fail. Period. No matter where you put them. You seem to have had rather a run of bad luck with them though! And did you actually replace the HD after it "started to fail" or not until later? Never continue using a HD that is obviously failing - though hindsight may be 20/20, of course. I would strongly recommend that you spend about $100 or so and get an external HD with Firewire and USB 2.0 and back up your internal drive every night or whatever feels right to you, so that you don't have to face this sort of mess again. SuperDuper is a wonderful backup utility available as shareware, as is Carbon Copy Cloner. Very cheap insurance in the long run.

What brand, size etc. of hard drive are you using? Have you run all utilities on them to verify them? Use Disk Utility and also Disk Warrior if you have it.

You should have enough memory to do what needs to be done, but may need to allocate more memory (RAM, BTW - your HD is not "memory" wink.gif ) For how to allocate memory in Classic see:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61528

A reinstall of Classic should solve the OT problem. I can't offer any first-hand experience on how to do it as I haven't run Classic in probably 5 years, but there is a fair bit of info here:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?t...13&tstart=0

You might want to consider moving your mail to OS X Mail. The support for Classic applications is just about nil these days and Mail is a very good email client. Reducing or eliminating your reliance on Classic would be my recommendation - a whole level of complication would be entirely removed. smile.gif

Thank you both for trying to help me. The next Question i'll go into more detail. Paddy ,i went to the two sites you mentioned. The second one was very helpful. I reinstalled 9.2.2 and that fixed most everything. Two items were only halfed fixed. But i found they had updates and that fixed that.
Even Disk Utility works now on both Hardrives. I only have two issues now , which i will delve into later.
Quicken 7, And retrival of OutLook Express 5.0.2.

Can't thank you all enough. Very Frustating.
