AT&T Mobility CEO confirmed that a 3G iPhone is "in the air"
and that AT&T will be having Apple put 3G chips in their phones
and in the near future all of AT&T's Smartphones will be 3G!

(Good thing i didn't open up my iPhone yet smile.gif )

Here's the article:

And meanwhile, here in Canada, we're still waiting for the iPhone - 3G or not 3G. Of course, until Rogers decides to jettison the cash cow of their ridiculously expensive data plans for the unlimited variety Apple demand, I guess we'll continue waiting. sad.gif Unfortunately, they have no competition to force them to do it since nobody else in Canada offers it, and they make their biggest profits from wireless.

Anyway - good news for those south of the border. smile.gif

Interesting discussion of 3G and the iPhone from last year:

I was hoping for a CDMA version somewhere down the line for use on Verizon.

But I came across this which makes me think differently:

QUOTE
LTE is what you expect from a next generation of communications protocols: it can fit more information into less bandwidth than its predecessors. It is meant to reduce the complexity of wireless communication by converting both voice and data communications into packets using Internet Protocol. Loosely speaking, it competes with the WiMax standard being promoted by Sprint and Clearwire, a startup founded by Craig O. McCaw, the cellphone entrepreneur.

They key fact isn't anything technical here. LTE is the format that has been endorsed by the GSM Association, which coordinates the wireless standard used in most countries. And it has been endorsed by AT&T. What it means is that in a few years, you will be able to buy phones and switch them between the two largest wireless networks in the United States—Verizon and AT&T—as well as carriers in most of the world.
