TS outrageous outages
« on: April 06, 2008, 06:41:12 PM »
Both Kris and I have noticed brief outages on TS in the past day or so, and I emailed ASO about it. This is the reply:

QUOTE
Hi,

We have been experiencing some issues with the DNS servers today.  It is causing intermittent inability to access sites hosted by ASO. Our administrators are aware of the problem and are working to fix it as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused and thank you for your patience.

So, nothing we can do about it other than to reload the page - eventually it does come back up, in my experience. Let's hope they get it fixed soon. smile.gif

Thanks for keeping an eye on things.

It's probably slower here (less "traffic") on weekends, so there's no better time for a glitch.

I haven't been able to get here at all since sometime yesterday afternoon, and I've tried off and on all day today.  It's amazing what one can accomplish when there's no TS to visit. wink.gif

I had tried to add a thing about the celebration in downtown Lawrence the other night but it didn't go; it wasn't worth trying again though!

And EVERYTHING in Memphis is Blue! I think they may cover the street lights with some blue colored gel that goes over spotlights! tongue.gif The team has certainly gone further than I ever thought they would...

A few times last week TS just presents a spinning wheel until I can't stand it any longer. Then, I close the tab and try again and it pops up like nothing's wrong! dntknw.gif I haven't reported it because I've seen he same response from some other sites, none of which are hosted by ASO, AFAIK. I just wrote it off to the clogging of the pipes...

on the odd occasion (like 10 minutes ago) when TS behaves rather shyly and does not appear I get the message " IPS driver error "
am I alone?

I've never seen an "IPS driver." Usually see the UPS driver every day, however.
But what do you do after seeing that error message? Thinking.gif
Are you accessing TS via a bookmark?

We are monitoring the situation and are keeping notes on problems at the moment.

No, George, you aren't alone. That is something you will get if the server is overloaded and can't access the database. Very early this AM I noticed our server was in the red and consequently it was hit and miss as to whether you got to TS or not and if you did how fast things acted.

If anyone who encounters problems would please keep a record of when and for how long and then post here when you do get back to the forum. It will help in our discussions with ASO. We may need to move to another server and more evidence of these glitches will help us decide what to do.

Couldn't reach here from around .. umm ... 12:45am-12:55am (I'm guessing, but that's close). At 1:15am I was able to pop right in.

I'm going to bed now. sleep1.gif

kriss, is there a way to see why the server is "in the red?" ASO maintenance? Bots? dntknw.gif My occasional 'denials' may be more related to the local server being less than purfeck! smile.gif

No, not that I can see. There is a 'chart' of the stats showing green, yellow and red colors as to usage and it always has one of the disks at 83-85% (yellow) and the other one is not bad in the 30s (green).  But the memory and server load fluctuate wildly sometimes going into red territory. That's usually means we can't get to TS. If things are in the yellow it usually just means things are slow.

Yesterday I had to repair the database at one point where one part had crashed. This was around 5 AM so probably no one noticed that TS was unreachable. Thing is, if this happens when Paddy or I aren't around TS could be offline for some time. sad.gif

Once we get some more info we may contact ASO about possibly moving to another server but we're not sure that will be much better. Am looking into ways to trim our database which will make things a bit faster for us anyway.
