Need 6" Firewire 9 pin - 9 pin cable
« on: May 11, 2008, 12:24:06 PM »
I have 4 LaCie Firewire drives stacked in a module. Because of cable length limitations (18 feet total), I want to piggy-back them. Since the drive's ports are within a few inches of each other, I wanted 6 "cables. However, the shortest I could find were 6" 9 pin-6 pin cables. Since I am chaining from drive to drive and then to the Max, can I use 6"  plugs as part of the chain. I am concerned because the 6 pin end implies one is connecting a FW 400 device to a FW 800 device. Therefore, using that cable will slow down the entire chain to FW 400 speed.

Anyone have any ideas>

3 foot cables: http://www.firewiremax.com/3fshfi800caf.html

18" cables: http://www.provantage.com/belkin-f3n405-18...pl~7BELC11P.htm (note: Amazon sells the same thing for an astonishing $39!!)

12" cables: http://www.mac-pro.com/s.nl/it.A/id.613/.f

And that's the shortest I could find. tongue.gif

Edit: shortest I could find for a reasonable price, that is. If money is no object and you really want to lose another 4", you can get 8" cables for a mere $39 EACH:

Tom, you might just want to email them and ask about the text on the page where the 800 is listed.

DatOptic’s FireWire cable has a transfer rate of 400 megabits per second for the fastest possible data transfer.

It may be that they just used the same description on the 400 and 800 pages but if it does only have a 400 megabit transfer then it will slow down your connection.
