No more Kernel panic but Directory corruption ...
« on: May 11, 2008, 09:18:06 PM »
Hi,

Always problem whith directory corruption on my internal back up drive, (there's two new WD inside)
Ran Rember memory test ...the available ram in thest was not equal to the real ram inside , so i remove one chip  and the test was ok...the number match.

Untill now no more Kernel panic , ......but after reformating the second (back up internal drive) and using SD to clone i just ran DW a few hours later on it  and got  this problem....

Could it be a bad disk  or...? ??

Booting on the slave  and running DW on the master ...things are ok

Don't know how to get out of that wallbash.gif wallbash.gif wallbash.gif wallbash.gif

Thanks

Is it the corruption that mentions 'text encoding' and similar file problems? If so, I'd just ignore it as a consequence of cloning.

Or is it the directory problem that says it is too severe to be replaced...?

You didn't put that other RAM chip back in did you?

I have found that TechTool Pro will rebuild directories that DiskWarrior won't.
Then afterwards DW can rebuild them.

Did you remove that Motu card?

When the new RAM arrives try running for a while with only it in place (temporarily remove the one that is in there now). Start with a fresh clone of the 'good' system and run for a week to see if you get the bad report again from DW. If not, then you know that the present RAM is also flakey.

If it still shows in DW as bad and TTPro as OK, then I would put both chips in and ignore the report unless you actually have problems with the computer. Quite frankly I haven't run DW for months or maybe a year, can't remember.

Waiting for ram...

Got an external  250 gb (5  45gb partitions) FW drive where i back up the fresh system (a month ago already..!!)

Can't boot on it maybe  about the 120 gb limit  Thinking.gif ... , got a firewire card but maybe not the good one ...?

Changed the motu card to another slot.... the driver is the latest... (don't removed yet...maybe later cause i'ts the sound out and i have to repatch )

but got  another kernel panic , seems always hapenning whith Firefox and quicktime , gonna try to update quicktime i'm actually at  7.0...

Usually get a window  after restart reportig the crash ....don't get it now, where could i find it?

The strange thing also is that the corruption happens  only on the second( new ) internal drive Thinking.gif
the boot drive is ok...

Hope to find the solution soon... sweatingbullets.gif

Thanks

I don't remember, is this the DA or the B/W Yikes that is giving you all this trouble?

You can go into Utilities/Console and read the crash and other logs.

after crash reporter in which chapter  and what should  i look to get some more  infos...?

Among  the reading found
ROM ndrv for ATY,Rage128Pd is too old (0xb6246498)  could this be part of the problem..?

Thanks very much Krissel

From what I've read - others posting with similar problems, yes, the driver for the ATI card could be the problem, but since it is Apple original equipment in that G4, any updates should have shown up in Software Update. You could try looking at Apple's support site to see if there is something you need to install.

Any discussions I found in forums were not resolved.

That is the display control panel which may or may not work with the built-in versions of the cards. You can try it and see but it doesn't change the ROM.

As best I can see this is the latest version of their drivers although it states "retail update":

http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/mac/mac...-3x-radeon.html

Apple sends you to AMD and then following the Mac>10.4>radeon you get the above.

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/driv...eondrivers.html

Actually the Tiger install should have the kexts needed for proper usage.

http://lowendmac.com/mail/0801mb/0102.html#6

Open System Profiler and go down to Software/Extensions. Once it opens see what ATI driver is loaded and what it says in the box  below.

(Just to note I have a Radeon 8500 installed and the proper extension is loading. I also have extensions in my System/Library/Extensions for the 128. Much like those in the lowendmac link article. Check to see if you also have those in your system folder.)

I'm going... drown.gif bottled.gif wallbash.gif getsick.gif soapbox.gif drool.gif

A few moments ago was always testing  whith DW from an external firewire drive and my 2 internals were found bad  by it ....than i try to change start up to another  external drive and  got "you can' log at this time, push enter and  got  the  infinite spinning wheel .... shut down the DA, unplug all the external firewire and restart.

Now DW found the drive scanned later good wallbash.gif ok to replace....don't understand what happens, it's about a month of testing , changing drives, formating ,reinstalling etc to get  something clean whith no success...maybe i must change the computer?

What do you suggest why-me.gif ?

Thanks for your help

Ok...wait a minute here...have you been running DiskWarrior from the Firewire drives? I don't know if that is a factor here, but it might be. I've never done that - only from one internal drive to another, or (much more commonly) from the DiskWarrior CD.

What sort of results do you get if you test the internal drives when booted from the DW CD? And which version of DW are you using - I'm afraid at this point, I've forgotten.

Also - back to that Motu card; which one are you using? I've seen reports (VersionTracker etc.) that the PCI 324 card is problematic - one person reported persistent kernel panics and finally upgraded to the 424 card and has had no issues since. So...could be that it's the card. Can you take the card out for a while and see how things go? If your problems disappear, I think you will have your answer.
