Can't Empty Trash

OK, now I have a similar problem to the Unmount problem.

I was cleaning off some ZIP disks today (erasing with Disk Utility).

I came to one that I wanted to save some of the items on.
So I drug the unwanted stuff to the trash.

PROBLEM — When I went to empty the trash, there were some old Classic Extensions that would not erase:



The trash bin contents:

Then, when I went to empty trash, I got the following error for each of the contents:

[attachment=970:Picture_2.jpg]

Repaired permissions, rebooted, etc. etc. &c.

Same old crap.

How do I get rid of these recalcitrant files??????

Jack, why don't you copy the things you want to save to your Mac, then reformat the disks? Then, if you really want to keep the old files on the Zip disks (not a format known for its reliability - not something I'd recommend actually) copy the files back to the nicely reformatted disks. Problem solved - one hopes. smile.gif

Have you tried:

1. Click & hold the cursor on the Trash Can. In the window that opens, select Empty Trash
2. A restart & then empty trash
3. Boot up from a disc with an OS installed & then empty trash.

Whatever happened to Option-Empty Trash?

Did that get thrown out with OS9?

I suspect that the ZIP disk thinks it should be (and maybe is) connected via Ethernet. All those files seem to have something to do with Ethernet, don't they?

As suggested, since you already have erased the useful data, why not reformat the disk(s) or even zero out the disk? If they will always be connected via Ethernet, these files may have been a part of their formatting originally?

To all who responded:

• Unfortunately, these recalcitrant files are in the trash can on my desk top.
• The Zip disk has been initialized.
• Option-Empty_Trash does not work (Items are in use.)
• Very stange indeed.

Is there anyway to access the trash can on my main drive after booting from my second bootable disc drive?
And emptying it?

Or a Terminal command to force empty trash?

I'd certainly give the alternate boot OS a try, it should not have even seen the ZIP drive/disk and therefore should not have those files "in use." And it's a whole lot safer than Terminal! smile.gif

Couldn't see the trash on Macintosh HD when I booted from backup drive.
So came back here and checked on Version Tracker for "Empty Trash"

Came up with a little gem called "Force Empty Trash"

DL'd & executed. BINGO!!! The trash is now EMPTY!!!!

Waaaalaaaaa!  thumbup.gif

All is again well in Trashland.
