I stumbled upon Name Mangler today.  I was considering A Better Finder Rename but $25 is a lot to pay for a one-trick pony. Name Mangler is donationware.

Now that I have Aperture 2 I can easily rename image files as I import them, so I probably won't be using Name Mangler very much...
