Anybody recognise who's singing Shenandoah here?
« on: August 25, 2008, 08:35:50 AM »
I reckon it's an American folk group from the accents, though you can't always tell with singers! Seems I put it into iTunes many moons ago, presumably before I knew how to load all the info along with it. This link takes you to a short clip.

Might be Kingston Trio or Limeliters, but would love to know for sure!

IMO, that IS NOT the Kingston Trio!!!

To my ears, it sounds unmistakably to be Roger/Jim McGuinn.  I cannot say whether with the Byrds or without...

Now I know I have to find the album!!!

You'd better; your credibility is on the line here! whistling.gif

Thanks for the links; I checked-out both of them: first, the mere fact that TKT 'covered' that tune is not relevant to this conversation [so did many other artists], I listened to the version of Shenandoah on that vid [which clearly is The Kingston Trio], and that song version bears no musical resemblance* to the one in the link that Highmac posted.

Until I am presented w/ evidence to the contrary [as opposed to opinions], I stand by my original assessment that the principal singer on Highmac's mystery track is none other than Roger McGuinn, former lead singer w/ the Byrds.

* TKT's version is much slower, and there is no audible banjo on that track

Peter and Paul "definitely"; Mary had laryngitis that day so you couldn't hear her!

The track I have in my iTunes library is identical to the one on Highmac's link.

It was ripped from one of the Kingston Trio albums I owned, but can't find.

Attn: Admins

Is there anyway I can post my version on TS like Highmac did?

I don't have access to a server.

Now I have my tarnished toothgrin.gif reputation to uphold!

Thanks, Jack

No offense kbear, but i ain't lyin! And I'm not accusing you of lyin either.

Never even heard of the Byrds and Roger McGuinn

BTW, I was also a BIG fan of the Kingston Trio back in their hayday, and attended a couple of their live concerts.
Also a big fan of Peter, Paul and Mary – also attended one of their live concerts.
and a few other such ilk.

Well, until somebody else hears and verifies this, only you know it.  Didja listen to the audio of that video?  Didja notice that it was NOT the same?  Mebbee you could email the mp3 to Highmac, and he could 'post' it [or at least ascertain and attest to its similarity]?

No offense taken, JW.  I do not think you are lying, merely mistaken.  And I am happy to 'change my tune' if/when presented with evidence to the contrary.  BTW, what would 'satisfy' my desire in this regard is to hear the same music from a second source [other than Highmac's clip] that is unambiguously attributed to TKT [note that I have d/l'd many tunes over the years that have been mis-attributed, so the operative word here is 'unambiguosly'].  The fact that you have already 'discovered' a version of the song in question [the video track] that is, quite obviously to my ear, performed by TKT, increases the need for unequivocal attribution in this case.

Never even heard of the Byrds [<--check out the very thorough Wikipedia entry*] and Roger McGuinn

Now that's a scary admission, IMO.  Never heard Mr.Tamborine Man;  You Ain't Goin' Nowhere;  My Back Pages; So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star; Eight Miles High; Turn! Turn! Turn!???  Several of these were Number One Hits, and several were written by Bob Dylan, and one by Pete Seeger.

* I just now learned there that McGuinn had played w/ the Limelighters beef-ore forming the Byrds, so maybe it's one of their recordings?

kb,

The video was probably recorded at a totally different session from the CD, and might have even been a different rendition.

Artists do many recording sessions and many different albums where they use different mixes of their songs.

Or recorded at various "live" performances.

And I ain't misteakin'.  I ripped the song from a KT album several years ago. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

And, yes I did email my version to Neil and he is going to post it in a couple of days.

Thanks, Neil!

Thanks, Kris.

The best rendition I've ever heard was done by the River City Ramblers.

You can hear a snippet here, and you can even buy the CD. wink.gif
