Which Internet Browser Do You Use?
« on: May 11, 2003, 06:19:22 AM »
I did this poll on my basketball forum, but they're all PC users and not everyone is in love with computer software, you know. I thought this would be a lot more fun.

I heard that Netscape and Mozilla are virtually indistinguishable now. Is this true? Any experts? Netscape was the first browser I ever used, a LONG time ago, when it destroyed everything else. It's a bit bulky now, I think. I remember when you could buy "Gold" versions of Netscape at Wal-Mart. Is this sort of marketing still in practice? Is there a bigger, buffer version of browsers out there only available to paying customers? It seems like they all put out their best stuff for free, now.

I use Safari. I also keep Internet Explorer, for Scrapbooking, although it looks like iCab Pro has that too now, but I was wondering, for any of you who have test-driven Safari but decided in favor of another browser: what features does your browser have that you can't live without? Why'd you jettison Safari?

Mozilla vis-à-vis Netscape is not a cloned relationship. Think manufacturing rather than genetics.

Mozilla is an open product, under constant scrutiny and development by zillions of interested people; Netscape is owned by AOL, and, well,  enough said. Want to know what Netscape may look like in a year or so, if AOL doesn't screw it over too much? That's Mozilla, today. It's  a free download. The current v 1.3 works splendidly with OS 10.x.

It's interface is attractive and intuitive, though I had some brief but real dilemmas with its creation of a "second" set of mail folders during installation (an adaptation to the multiple users basis of OS X). Couldn't trash them, though unwanted; ignoring was the solution.

Mozilla's only current shortcoming, IMO, is the lack of integrated spell checking - - presumably coming in the next version. Advantage: Netscape!

I'm old fashioned and not. I've always thought it quite advantageous to have mail and browsing integrated. That compensates, as far as I'm concerned, for any speed differences claimed  by any competitors vs. Mozilla (Netscape).

I'll certainly try Safari when my friends tell me it's really finished, but until OSX Mail is finally written by engineeers, rather than Summer Interns (or whatever),  so that its truly obvious problems are absolutely solved, Safari - - to me - - is just another fast browser w/o mail.   tongue.gif

Primarily I use Safari and Camino. Either one will rarely choke on certain sites. When one chokes I just switch to the other. Camino is faster than Safari, but I have most of my bookmarks in Safari, so I guess I use it the most.

This poll should be multiple choice... wink.gif
For me, it's Camino and Safari in equal measure, for different reasons.
They're almost always both open now.
And still iCab for its amazing range of print options.
Omniweb "sneakypeek 4.5sp23" because I back the ongoing development of that one.

IE5 I have permanently "mislaid". rolleyes.gif

For OS X I mostly use Safari now. smile.gif

Especially since TS looks the best in Safari, IMO.

For OS 9.x I still use IE 4.5 and IE 5.x when I need to.

I tried the Tabs in Safari and stopped using them.

I prefer to open new windows for searching and posting links.

Tabs just made it too confusing.

To my mind. Tabs would work best with Broadband.

Load five sites at once and such. smile.gif

 LOL.

So true.

Yeah, there are zero votes so far for America Online. If you use that, justify yourself. I remember the first time my cousins got on the internet they were using AOL- "America's #1 Browser!"- and I puked on them. You can't even access the internet on that thing!

Yeah, I was considering multiple options; maybe that would have been better.

You use iCab to scrapbook, then? That, to me, is an indispensable feature. Sometimes I find pages on the web that have information, and I know the pages are temporary or at risk of going offline permanently, so I scrapbook. Bookmarking doesn't suffice in those instances. I use it for so many other purposes, too.

You say iCab has great print options. What do you use it to print?

Also, what do you need both Safari and Camino for? I tried out Camino for a little bit, but it didn't seem to have anything Safari didn't that I used, but I didn't trial it for an extended period of time, so that's why I started this thread.

If the Mac version of Opera ever adds the motion gesturing, though, SNAP! I'm on it.

This is very odd - I was the first person to put in a written reply to this thread, but it has now disappeared! Same with one I made a while ago on Krissel's thread about her intruder. Hmmm??? Something weird is going on. blink.gif

Anyway, though I have every OS X browser under the sun, and may have 4 open at once checking web page design, for browsing, searching and posting, Safari is now my number one choice. I've come to rely on that little Google search window so much that I go looking for it in other browsers. One thing that I like about Omniweb that Safari doesn't offer, is spell check. I was reminded of that nice feature the other day when I took Omniweb out for a spin, and made a post here.

Well, let's see if THIS post sticks!

Why do you guys use spell check?

I don't compose in my web browsers, so I don't understand why I would use it. I mean, when I'm reading, if I don't know a word is misspelled, it means I don't know the word. If I don't know the word, I'll look it up and find the proper spelling anyway.

Did you Netscape users read RHP's post on Mozilla vs. Netscape? Did he convince you Mozilla is better? Why do you use Netscape instead?

Man, oh, man, Safari is slaughtering peope. I expected more users of iCab.

Paddy,

You can use the spell check feature in Safari if you go to Edit/ Spelling. smile.gif

IAWT, my real answer would have been multiple choice.

I currently am test driving and fairly liking Safari on all my Macs in my household.  My family is really liking Safari too for the extreme speed.  Yet, it is not finished and does have it's limits.  Certain types of drop down menus don't work, bookmarks are cumbersome and the issue of not all the animated smiley's working.

But, shortly before (less than a month ago, actually only a couple of weeks ago) I was a diehard Netscape user.  Still am at heart, I think the tabbed browsing in Netscape 7 is much better than in Safari and that has to be one of the main likings for me in any browser (tabbed browsing, so convenient, never more than one window open anymore).

I keep the other browsers around, but only use them to check compatability issues with web pages while surfing.

Hi Harv,

Before, IE would have been the fastest and most compatible, but time has changed and so has browsers.

IMO, the GECKO engine renders web pages much faster that IE, and still does it correctly (mostly).  That would be my take on that.  But now that Safari is out, VROOOOMMMMM!!!!!   biggrin.gif

Be respectful of yer elders kid! clap.gif

Some of us need spell checks, even with , uhmmm, enhanced vocabularies, because even though we've been typing for 60+ years, we're still crappy typists. Sad to say.

"We" sure are! verysad.gif
