PSE 4 acting odd
« on: October 29, 2008, 10:25:26 AM »
I use Elements 4 all the time, and recently its been giving me this "Could not complete your request because of a program error"
If I click OK several times then it goes away.
Anybody know what it means or how to make it stop?
Thanks,
Jane

Jane, where are you trying to open the photo from?

http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6b8b2

In Windows, this can be because of a corrupt thumbnails cache, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out where PSE keeps that, assuming that there is one.

Try deleting the .plist file - could be corrupted preferences.

Hi Paddy,
Thank you for the link, I used to use their forum all the time, they are wonderful.
So I put my question there too.
Its odd that my trouble happens only when I finish working on a picture or I close PSE, so I click the OK button
several times and it just goes away.
Really strange, as PSE acts perfect in every other way. Just started doing this a few days ago,
Jane

Jane, there is no harm in deleting the .plist file (in your user->library->preferences folder) - it might solve the problem. Worth a try. smile.gif

Ive never had to do that before, here goes, nope, still happens. But I might not have done the right version, so I will do them both this time.
Still there with PSE 4, but not there with PSE 6.
I just click the OK 4 times and it disappears though.
Thanks again, its mysterious.

Solved!  I restarted that Mac and the gremlins flew out the window.

Wish PSE 6 was as compliant. It refuses to maintain my choices for jpeg quality. "Publish for the web" must be chosen twice (command-option-shift-s). I'm doing these things several times a week getting stuff ready for our church site. Others have complained, maybe someone has found a clue, I'll have to go back to those forums...sad.gif

I will be starting a class using 6 next week, and Ive already found a few things about 6 that I dont like. Want to find out the solutions to these things. This class will give us work-arounds.
For example, the old versions let you see the desktop where your pictures are that you are working on.
This one obscures everything, so you have to 'hide' to see stuff and get to the other photos. And everything is gray, old eyes like mine like white or brighter anyway.
I am sure that these issues will be brought up by us students, and we have an amazing instructor, and she will be able to help us with this.
So let me know if there are things that you want me to bring up in class, as we all havent been using 6 much, and know that these questions will be relevant.
TS was down for a while, but I see its OK again, so here comes my post.

Yes...TS was down for about 8 minutes. 4th time in the last 36 hours or so that I've caught. There may be more. dry.gif We're going to be asking to be moved to another server in the near future (probably at night, over a weekend -  the board only has to be shut off for about 4 hours total) - our current server seems to have considerably more traffic than some others at ASO, so we hope it will help.

As for PSE6 - I agree that the screen takeover is truly annoying and extremely UN-Mac-like. Not as bothered by the gray, though it would be nice if they'd give us options via the preferences!

You can complain/suggest directly to Adobe here:

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

I just did - about the very annoying screen takeover. If enough of us complain, maybe they'll fix it. They didn't do this in PS CS4, so there is no reason they HAVE to do it in PSE.

And now the &*&%^ server is down AGAIN. dry.gif

Any time any of you want to check things - go to http://status.asmallorange.com/ - our server is "Analucia." If the little orange is brown, we be down.

You can also see the server load, uptime etc. here: http://analucia.asmallorange.com/server-status (note: can't get to this if the server is down, of course)

Oh, that is neat!
Could I view my webhost server like this?  Would be interesting. I love to learn stuff like this.

Ive never known mine to be down, but I dont know the difference between a webhost and a big server hosting big stuff like forums like this.
My webhost is
http://www.machighway.com/
I love these guys, as they have phone tech support, and that is so wonderful for a beginner like me. They explained everything, as they were setting it up for us.
Thanks again,
Jane

Since they're running OS X servers (I presume) I assume that they're running Apache and you should be able to see the server status - if you know the name of your server.

Looks like a good host, BTW. And ASmallOrange is a relatively small host as well - our site actually runs on their "Small" plan, believe it or not:

http://www.asmallorange.com/services/hosting/

Chris uses them for his site and I have the Northlea site on ASO as well. A lot of people think they need massive amounts of storage and bandwidth, and go shopping for a host on that basis. Many of the big guys promise you ridiculous amounts of space and bandwidth - but woe betide anyone who actually USES that amount of bandwidth! People get told they're "using too many resources" etc. etc. and find themselves shut down. The "big guys" bank on you NOT using even a fraction of the bandwidth they're offering, and no doubt make a handsome profit doing so. ASO, on the other hand, actually offers something a little more realistic and though they have no phone support, their email support (even for billing) is 24/7 and extremely fast. You usually get a response within minutes. So, apart from the issues we've had lately on this server, I'd give them high marks. Yesterday I installed Wordpress on the Northlea site in minutes - they have Fantastico, which makes this sort of thing really, really easy.

I do have sites at GoDaddy and we had the North Andover school district sites at LunarPages. Both have been no problem. GoDaddy doesn't offer some of the capabilities that ASO does though - I don't think running a Joomla site on their basic hosting would be much fun. Their control panel is also pretty limited.

Anyway...we've strayed a long way from the original topic! wink.gif

While it still hides the edges of the screen, you can let your desktop show by setting the "General->Fill Background" to UNchecked. Another thing I can't get the prefs to do is to remember that I don't want that %$@# 3 inch wide, tall as the screen wasted! That where I usually keep my pallette floating window (which does not float above that space). There is a very tiny little close-this-annoying-pallette space-if-you-can-find-me button...

And everything is gray
This "feature" keeps the images from being seen as too dark/contrasty/something by having that annoying white Mac border. wallbash.gif However, it appears that PC users don't like it any better than we do, Elements 7 (right, PC only) has an option to vary that greyness.

I just wish Adobe would get busy learning how to program for the future and stop trying to re-invent the wheel! rant.gif

Oh, Thank you!  Unchecked that fill background thing, now I can stop having to hide the program. I never thought to look in the prefs.
