Western Digital Passport Drive Experiences?
« on: November 07, 2008, 02:49:06 PM »
Staples has a 250GB USB 2.0 drive that costs $65 after using a $25 off coupon I received in the mail.  I was going to get an OWC USB/Firewire drive but it is twice as expensive...

Does anyone have experience with the WD portable drives? Is there anything that I need to know? Besides the lack of FW the WD does not have an AC option like the OWC drive. I have read that some USB ports do not supply enough power so that a dual-USB cable must be used. (MacWorld article about using bus-powered drives with older portable Macs.) I would to use this drive work as a bootable volume should my internal MBP drive die...

I need to decide by Saturday because an "instant coupon" for $9 expires on 11/8.

I guess the intel Macs can use unpowered USB drives to boot from. Maybe it was the PPC models that had to load the USB stuff at boot up, which didn't happen in time to use an external USB drive. Thinking.gif

But I would also be wary of an un-powered external drive. I can only assume that it is actually a 'laptop' (lowerer power requirement type) model, incased in a box. Of course, carrying around another cable and cord is just one more thing to leave behind! wallbash.gif Would be great to have a live test to be sure...

Only thing I know is that a good friend who repairs older Macs, including changing hard drives, considers WD as at least second rate compared to Hitachi. I'm pretty sure my external (AC powered) 500GB drive is a WD. The model and serial number both have "WD..." in them.NOPE! That's the internal in the iMac! The external is a Hitachi, that's why I bought it! wallbash.gif I've only had it for about a year and no problems at all, Quiet as a mouse (and so is the OWC enclosure).

Finally, I find that most of my 'buy it before the coupon expires' purchases were not as wise as they should have been. YMMV (hopefully!). There's usually a reason things are marked down. Be sure the warranty starts with the purchase and not the manufactured date, BTW! I'd be doing some extensive Goggling tonight for any problems with that model. dntknw.gif

Mayo, I have an external 2.5" USB drive (not a WD - one I assembled myself) and it requires the double USB cable to power it. I suspect that this is the case with all of them - making those moving bits move seems to require a bit more juice than one USB cable supplies.
