Photoshop Elements (6) enigma
« on: November 11, 2008, 11:32:59 AM »
Not a HUGE problem, just a vexing one.

Can anyone enlighten me as to how to shrink the window in PSE6. It absolutely devours 101% of my iMac's 24' monitor . . . with no LR corner handle, no UL corner gumdrops to adjust the size.

Am I overlooking something, or is this Adobe screwing us over (again) after finally fixing in v.6 the near-interminable opening "credits"?

Not possible. No prefs allow it. It's a "feature" not a bug! About the only thing you can do is to allow the desktop to be visible (mostly) and two keep the useless areas on the bottom and right-hand side collapsed. The prefs cover the first item (Prefs->General uncheck "Fill workspace background"). The S/W seems to 'remember' the second item (Project Bin). So far, I can't train it to keep the blasted Palette Bin closed, I have to do that manually, every time I need access to something in that part of my Desktop. wallbash.gif

Be aware, of course, that making the Desktop visible allows you to access whatever is showing. And there's still my old standby, command-tab to get to any running program, windowed or not. The only thing you are really losing is the quarter inch or so around the entire screen! wallbash.gif Hurt.gif

We had a discussion just recently about that particular "feature" and it was agreed that nobody liked it and it was very un-Mac-like.

I encourage people to make their displeasure known to Adobe:

Yes, that can be aggravating, though you can get rid of the way the screen blocks out the desktop, by going to the prefs and unchecking the Fill Workspace.  TS clued me in to that last month, that was driving me batty.

The frame still covers a lot of the desktop when you do that though, Jane - still not acceptable in my book and I think we should all complain loudly. rant.gif biggrin.gif

Thats true, though I push the stuff out of the way.  Not the frame,,,,,,and I dont want to push the tools away, yes, it might be a good idea for us to all say what we do and what we dont like.
Adobe is pretty good at trying to please the customers.

Is it not possible to "hide" the application?  Curious, because I've been thinking of buying "6". . .

Apart from that little annoyance, PSE 6 is a very good application, Beacher. I do use it quite a bit, even though I have Photoshop CS3 and will no doubt get CS4 sometime in the not too distant future. It does some things that its big brother doesn't - like provide really easy redeye fixes, which perhaps you might not want to use in portrait photography (where you shouldn't have redeye problems to begin with) but when you're dealing with hundreds of photos submitted by parents for a school yearbook like I am, that alone makes it worth the purchase price!!

IAWPaddy, enthusiastically, Ed.

Thanks to everyone who commented.

I've been somewhat "off my feed" during part of this summer (year!) and I missed that earlier discussion.

While PSE 6 seems to 'remember' that I do not want the Project Bin (that name should tell you what group Adobe wants to please, BTW) open, it still wants to have the Palette Bin open after I close it and Quit. HAs anyone been able to get the program to 'remember' that setting? wallbash.gif

beacher, you can certainly "Hide" PSE, but it's just as easy to click on an open, visible window of the app you want. Or use the fabulously useful and elegant, command-tab to get to any program, including the Finder, of course, visible or not. clap.gif I gotta go now and replenish my comma supply... blush2.gif
