OS X is DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!
« on: May 15, 2003, 03:24:14 AM »
After giving up on resolving me no print problem with my laser writer, I decided to return to OS 10.2.4 from OS 10.2.6. Apple Tech said to first install from my OS 10.2 CD, using an archive install. Then I downloaded the 10.2.4 combo updater. First it woudn't open. Then, with disk copy I got it to open but the pane was blank! Then I realized to fine print said OK to upgrade 10.2.1, 10.2.2,10.2.3. Note it said nothing about upgrading from 10.2.0 which I had.

So then, I downloaded 10.2.2 combo updater figuring I would install over 10.2.0. Nope, first it didn,t open and even if it did, it might have not worked with 10.2.0.

So here I am seriously thinking about staying with 9.2.2.  verysad.gif  However, I realized if I can find a disk with OS 10.2.2 or 10.2.3, I archive install that OS and then invoke the 10.2.4 combo updater. So I now need to get my hands on a 10.2.2 CD installer and maybe I will survive this mess. Any one know of where I can buy one?

Never used archive and install.

Have you tried a clean install?

That's what I'd do. Backup your files and wipe the HD. Then start by installing OS 9 and then OS X.2. Once installed you shouldn't have any problems upgrading to OS X 10.2.whatever.

It's more work since you're going to have to backup all of your files, but I always felt it was worth it because afterwards the system was running as it should.

Have you tried Software Update? In some cases you need other updates (like security updates, etc) before some of these combo updates will work.

Launch the Software Update application and see what choises it gives you.

Hello, Mama Moose,

On 11 May I posted the following:

I have 2 of David Pogue's Missing Manual books.
The one on OS9 has 461 pages.
The one on OSX (2nd edition) has 712 pages.
Just an observation.

Good luck!

What mac do you have?

Why do an archive install? I would recommend backing up what important files you have..and doing a clean install like someone else recommended. OS9 first then OSX.

Then, get the combo updater, if it's still available. I can look around for you if you want.

OSX shouldn't be that hard. I'm not sure about that printer and compatibility. How old is it? What brand/model is it? This way I can ask some friends of mine and they might be able to help out.

Combo updaters have ALL of the necessary updates...security ones included. That's why it's called combo  wink.gif

From Apple's site that Al linked above:
The update also provides updated security services and includes the latest Security Updates.

Heh, heh, yeah that's true... biggrin.gif

MamaMoose had the symptom of the updater not installing...that's sometimes the case if something is missing...it just wont install. Launching the control panel helps to locate some of the missing components...if in fact anything IS missing.
