Disk Warrior 3.0
« on: May 18, 2003, 04:39:48 PM »
My copy arrived yesterday and all seems as advertised (I’m still poking around with the new preferences/auto check). So far, I have found there to be a significant increase in speed re rebuilding the directory, but because I have not had problems, I do not yet know how well it works when presented with major problems. I found that by putting a copy on each of my two drives, I can run DW without using the CD.

For those who may have missed the fine print, DW 3.0 will not defragment (there is no PlusOptimizer).

Also, I strongly recommend one read the ReadMe and Installation instructions. What I thought a bit atypical (for example): the recommended install is to drag the DW icon to the Applications/Utilities folder, not just the Applications folder.

If it performs as previous versions have, then indeed the investment will pay a most handsome dividend.

Question Pendragon! If DW will not defrag, what are its benefits? MacJanitor or Jags built in schedular already optimize the directory.

Gary, Nope, no advance email from Alsoft--unless, in my haste, I somehow deleted it as spam. It just showed up like an unemployed brother-in-law, but far more welcome.

Gmann, DW (IMNHO) has a history of repairing directories that other utilities just can't match. If the option is to suffer the directory problem, reinstall the OS, or run DW. My choice is clear. For sure it has saved my bacon more than once. After all, DW is designed and inended to reair directories not defragment (that has always been an add-on).

Thanks Harv.

DiskWarrior is just plain simply GOOD!

I wouldn't be without it. I've been using DW 2.1.1 on OS10.2.5 while booted into OS9.2.2
and it varies as far as the Directory graph but sometime, especially after a few big installs or a System upgrade, the Directory is sometimes 5-10% out of wack so......I like de DiskVarrior!  biggrin.gif

I haven't been e-mailed by Alsoft either & as my calendar shows I pre-ordered it 3/20, I sort of expect it to show up any day now.

Since I got my new,new iMac 3/14, I have not been able to boot with my DW 2.1.1 disk, so am really looking forward to receiving it.

I guess my problem is, that everytime Apple bumps up the OS certain apps no longer work fully. I have lost the use of several shareware and expensive applications due to these bumps. I have paid for several upgrades of DW and TT pro.
Having become somewhat jaded with being nickle and dimed due to upgrades I have quite buying for the forseeable future. Will DW3 or TT4 work with panther when it comes out? How about the IBM 970 cpu when it comes out this year?
I have drive10 version 1.05 and it is not adequate for 10.2.6. Am I going to pay another $70 for 1.1.4? Certainly not. I do not mean to sound so negative, but as previously stated I have become rather jaded concerning software updates. unsure.gif

I too am awaiting DW 3.0. I pre-ordered it at least two months ago. It has saved me over a dozen times and I am sure I wouldnot have been in the fix I was in in upgrading to OS 10 if I had it.

Just received DW3 in today's mail. I haven't used it yet.

...and, gmann, I agree with you & I haven't upgraded to TTPro either. I feel as tho I'm maxed out on upgrades for awhile except for DW, of course! Had to have it.

We are in that time of year here now where I'll be unplugging everything electrical during storms. I had to yesterday & last night so today am trying to play catch-up.

Installing DW 3.0 on my OS X drives was routine in all aspects. However, when I attempted to install DW 2.1.1 (also on the CD) on a 9.2.2 drive, the install always failed and left the drive untouched.

After several attempts, I noticed that the install always failed at the point it was attempting to install Scripts. I then attempted a custom install, this time without the scripts. Success!

Alsoft bug or my machine? I dunno. But for sure the above work around gets the job done (I repeated/tested the work around 3 times). A subsequent call to Alsoft Tech Support indicated that was the first they heard of it, but that it was worthy of further checking.

Got my Disk Warrior Upgrade today and installed it. Ran into some difficulty. First I coppied it to my OS 10.2.4 current and backup. Then I tried to boot from the CD. Took about 8 - 10 minutes to boot!!!!

Then I ran it on my main Jaguar and that took some time until it went through thousands of files. Got a bunch of fixable problems, 95% were in the Previous Systems folder. Ran repair and replace and then I closed DW. Ther is no System startup folder but as soon as I Quit DW, it automatically restarted. After about 10 minutes watching the spinning  gray hamster wheel, I interupted the restart and restarted again and I finally booted into my system.

Talked to Alsop Tech Support and they said it was slow. So, patience is the key here. As far as trying to restart after repair, I do not know what the problem is but I assume it will be fixed in the next upgrade. By the way DW 3 uses 10.2.5 a that was furnished to Alsoft by Apple.

In any case I rest easier knowing I have DW in my toolbox.

MM, You sure were correctomundo when you said DW loads slow. At first I thought I was having screen freezes/hangs/stalls.

Re restarting, I found the solution is to hold down the Option key immediately upon restart so that I may then select the start up drive.

Another point I should clear up--I said (above) that PlusOptimizer was not included with DW 3.0. Well, that is true. But, included on the CD is DW 2.1.1 for installation on Classic. And Plus Optimizer is included as part of that install. So, if you can install DW 2.1.1, you will have (some) access to PlusOptimizer.

Pendragon & MamaMoose, why did you two install DW on your HD? I've been reading the "read me's & it looks to me as though I'll be using it the way I always did.....starting up from the DW CD instead of installing it. So I'm curious & need to know if I'm missing something I didn't see. I can see the convenience of installing it maybe on my external FW disk so I can use that disk to repair my internal disk.

MamaMoose, I did read that if you have started up from the CD that when you have finished you should restart by choosing restart from the Apple menu. (see top of page 29 in the DW manual)..in other words, don't quit the application.

Based on your experience, I'll wait until tomorrow to run it & practice having patience which doesn't come easy to me.

Thanks for any help or tips you can give me.   wacko.gif

Daffy, I installed it for three reasons:
1. It allows for auto detection of potential problems (otherwise not available).
2. Running an installed DW is much faster than running it from the CD. Since I now have it installed on two separate drives, to use DW I now merely reboot to the other drive rather than loading the painfully slow CD.
3. If the CD drive were to become corrupt or fail, I can still run DW.

OK. Thanks, Harv. Fair enough.

The auto protection you mention must be about the same as the DW Shield we had installed on OS 9.  I think I will install it tomorrow on my external FW drive.
