Apple with multiple passwords?
« on: January 26, 2009, 08:22:07 PM »
I buy music and find this message for some of it,
I try to put my password in, and its wrong???
And I got a mobile me account as the old dot mac one didnt work for some things, the dot mac one still works but cannot upload any more pictures to my albums.
Never got a mobile.me email either?
But why do they say that I need another password?
Ive changed it using their instructions, but still this annoying thing about my purchased songs persists.
Its not user friendly and new Mac users are quite angry with it, and I have no advice, as I cant get it solved myself and Ive been a subscriber forever. Ive got friends with this problem too?
Im not sure if I want to pay money and download any more songs if I cant play them!
Anybody else having problems with this?
I will put a screenshot in.
Jane

Jane, when I had problems (not the same one, but something weird with passwords etc.) I just called Apple at 800-275-2273. Somehow or other, I got the help I needed. And no, it wasn't when I had a new Mac, so I'm not sure how I managed it! You can always try...

So, just so I understand this issue: your password doesn't work, and when you try to reset it, it goes to a non-existent me.com account and not to your mac.com email address?

If I recall, this wasn't all that different from the issue I was having - a Catch 22 if there ever was one.

Try calling Apple, and if that doesn't work, then try emailing them. And yes, they do deal with people who've forgotten everything too, so I'm sure they can straighten things out for you. smile.gif

To buy music (or anything else) via iTunes, you need either the 'magic number' on a Gift Card or have a valid credit card on record at Apple. If it has been some years since you provided that info, the card may have expired. However, the dialog, in that case, would normally have just asked you to enter the new info somewhere. But when you entered that info, you may also have used a slightly or even completely different password. I'm hoping that you still have the email confirmation that was sent at that time. But, even if you can't find that (or where you 'hid' that info!) you should be able to get help as Paddy suggested. And don't forget the secret code for getting a human at Apple Support! (SHhhh... don't let anyone else know that code posted back <here> )

Yes, everything is up to date, credit card and passwords work on all my Apple stuff......except these 2 or 3 individual songs. Odd thing about it, they were all purchased at the same time, and most of them worked just fine.
Even the others by the same artist and off the same album work!
Maybe somebody doesnt like gospel music by Pops Staples and the Staples singers, but I do and I really want that song(and the 2 others).
Great advice to call them, and I will use that number you gave me before, as I got a live humanoid right here in USA.
Maybe they can figure it out.  Perhaps if I go ahead and buy the same song over again, it might work, but I dont want to do that without knowing what the outcome will be.

And in the meantime, I will set up the mobile.me email, though I sure dont need it.
Thanks again,
Jane

Jane, did you buy those songs recently? You could always go into the accounts part of the iTunes store, look at your purchasing history and if those songs are your most recently purchased, you can click on "report a problem" and they'll be credited to your account and removed from your iTunes library. I did that the other day when for some reason or other I got charged for the U2 single that was supposed to be free if you pre-ordered the album. Decided I wasn't about to wait to see if that amount got debited off the total album price when I got billed for the album...and the song stayed in my library, so I guess it was some sort of billing error. (??)

Hi Paddy,
Im looking for that purchasing history, I got a message that 'all songs have been purchased and downloaded', but no list of them.  Thats as far as I could get.
Im using an old version of iTunes, its 6. I wonder if thats the problem. My big speakers are on this Mac not my newer one.
I go onto the support page, and just get to a dead end.
So its time for the phone call.

If they claim to be downloaded, maybe a search or even a different sort selection will make them visible in iTunes. If you are getting e-mail confirmations of your purchases, it might help to have that when you call. I think you can also re-download a purchased track but I've never done it. There should be info about that in the iTunes Help pages, enter something like lost tracks or re-download in the search field. I'd do that for you but I'm on my iPhone... smile.gif

I have the email confirmation, and will call this afternoon.
Thank you for all the info, I will get to the bottom of this, though 2 or 3 dollars isnt much, its the idea that I bought a song or 2 that I want and they are unaccessable.

Gee, I learned something odd, to get to your account, you have to go back to the old email receipt, then click on a song in the body of the email. Nothing to do with iTunes until you do this, then it opens. THEN you get to your account.
So Ive turned in 2 problems with that song items. Got info that it was received, and to wait for an answer.
This is interesting, as it sure is not intuitive. But now we know how to do it with iTunes 6. Its probably a lot easier with the newer versions, well maybe.

?

Doesn't iTunes 6 have an accounts section on the left hand side? I can't actually remember this - I looked at the screen shots I found in Google... wink.gif

Anyway, I'm just curious - why are you still using iTunes 6 as iTunes 8 runs fine under Tiger? smile.gif

Nope, no way to get into your account with 6 unless you answer/click on the emails.

Im running 6 here on this older soccar-ball Mac as I dont see any reason to upgrade it and my big speakers are here. I can play all my songs without trouble, except the 2 that I started this thread about.

And I had trouble with my iPod when I upgraded on the other Mac, yes troubles that were talked about with moving music from one computer to the other. Moving music and stuff like that can be tricky, so Ive left my stuff on this one. So I kept 6 on this one and there is no problem with the iPod.
Moving music from one computer to the other is rather stupidly set up, so I just networked them and it worked OK.  Third party apps will help with this, though I didnt need them, but did read all about how to do it.
Why must Apple make things so complex?

I really don't even know what version of iTunes I've got but all my email confirms have several links to check stuff like my account info, iTunes terms, iTunes FAQs, weather in Hawaii, etc. smile.gif

Click on iTunes in the menu bar when it's running Jim..."About iTunes" - or just highlight it in the Finder. Since you're using 10.5.4, it's a good bet that you're running iTunes 8.02, and your iMac would have shipped with something more recent than 6.0.

Jane, I found an image that I'm pretty sure is of the iTunes '06 store (it was posted about a month before iTunes 7 was released):

http://www.romeo-theater.com/pressroomgrap.../rtonitunes.jpg

I know it's dark, but if you look carefully, there is an Account link on the Quick Links right hand menu, third from the top. Is that not there in your version? (I'm just puzzled, that's all....I could have sworn I've gone to my iTunes store account from within iTunes ever since I started buying music there, which was quite a while ago!)

Hi Paddy,
Mine is a bit different, the right top corner only has 'search' and 'burn disc'. Its actually version 6.0.5 (20)
Here's a screenshot.
I did get an automated response from Apple this morning but the 'solutions' were nothing like my problem.
They say they will send a personal response later today.
So I guess we are on the right track. Even when I 'find info' on each song in that album, they are all the same.
Thanks again,
Jane

Jane,

Think you need to 'go' to the music store portion of iTunes to see what Paddy is explaining.
From what I can tell from your screen shot you are just in 'your music' portion of iTunes.
