"My Genius" this morning first suggested going for an exorcism at the nearby cathedral. I demurred.
Then, after doing some mysterious hardware checks via cable with his MBAir, he asked if I had made a recent back-up. I replied that, in anticipation of my meeting with him, I had both downloaded the new firmware version and synced with MobileMe about an hour before arriving for my appointment.
Hard Reset was immediately the "verdict". Who was I to disagree. So, in less than 3 minutes everything on the phone was hosed, then one application (calendar, as I recall) was reinstalled by his resetting, and I received the instruction to sync when I returned home, but
NOT restore.
So, that's what I did. A couple of very simple dialogue boxes appeared that provided only those choices (I made the correct one), subsequent to which iTunes immediately began a full synching with some ancillary actions that automatically occurred with such speed that I barely noticed what was happening . . . there was some reference made to my '09 iTunes version, as I recall.
And, it was completed, post haste.
Was out-of-town this afternoon and evening, associated therewith a 48 minute call to NYC, without incident. Subsequently, NO "involuntary" calls to the world-at-large, or anywhere else. Let's hope that that is that!
