BTW, in searching for the fan control app, I found a site stating that the 2.1.2 version had a <bug> that is fixed in the next version. I've just downloaded one that's even newer (2.1.3.1). Should not be a major problem if you are the only user of the machine, however. salute.gif

Folding?
Protein folding. It's what they do in their spare time, I guess. smile.gif Here are some links for a much better explanation than I could provide!

<Wikipedia>
<Official Folding@Home site>
<short video> BTW, our folding apps don't include the folding 'music!' smile.gif
<A very interesting visualization video>
Of course, my 'sig' is a link to the Team Mac OSX site.

The apps we use also include one that can display any protein they might be working on in any of those variations shown in that last video.

The Wiki one was really informational smile.gif
Is this something you can do on your computer?
I guess it's something like people can help SETI search while their computer is "idle"?

Is this something you can do on your computer?
Absolutely! That's the whole point of these kinds of things. The technical name is "shared computational power" or "shared computing." By using thousands of individual computers, sometimes more can be accomplished than by using one huge, very expensive, dedicated computer. And it's almost free for the researchers as we volunteers do this for nothing but the pleasure of helping science/health research. And you are correct SETI is uses the same principles.

Come on in, the water's fine! You don't have to be online 24/7. Don't even have to have the computer on 24/7. You'll simply get work done quicker if you do that and may see your 'rankings ' climb faster. smile.gif

Hey, now I get your signiture banner tongue.gif

I might check it out but in general, when I don't use the computer, it's off.
So that wouldn't help much right?

Every little bit helps! smile.gif As long as you Mac is on for a few hours every day and you're connected to the Internet each day, the work should get done and uploaded back to Stanford just fine. There are time limits on each work unit but their sever seems to be able to figure out what size units to send to each computer and how long to wait for the unit to be completed. That lets slow computers or ones that aren't always on still be of use in the research. clap.gif

Just be sure you sign up as Team # 1971! That way, you can help the score of the Mac OSX group (we've dropped to 9th place from 6th! Lots of "overclockers" out there! eek2.gif )!
