Ran DU to fix permissions. Got this error.

"Disk Utility stopped on hard disk do to the following.

 ERROR: No valid package".  huh.gif

Anybody come across this in their travels through time?

I'm stymied. Can't repair permissions. Buck

I believe the "package" DU wants to see is the one that came when the app was installed. It actually should be a "package" in your HS/Library/Receipts folder. Have you by chance moved any of those? It may be next to impossible to find the one among dozens that might be 'invalid' but I don't think you need to look at any except the latest ones that are for Apple software, I don't think DU even checks the third-party stuff, nice as that might be.

Actually, it's a specific package missing:

This happens when the BaseSystem.pkg file is not in /Library/Receipts.

You'll need to either find it and put it back, or do an archive and install, assuming that you've done updates since you installed whichever version of OS X you're currently running, Buck.

This is a good reminder NOT to clean out that receipts file!

Do to the absents of a Firewire. Is it possible to E-Mail this app, to myself.

 I know, sounds dumb.

You can't use the receipts from one OS install on another OS install.

It sounds like somehow you deleted the receipts from your hard drive. That's a big deal; it can completely mess up your system. The best fix is to re-install OS X.

Buck, if your optical drive is dead, then you have two options; replace it (may be difficult on an eMac) or get an external rdrive. The latter option probably is a bit more expensive and somewhat easier!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827129023 (shipping is about $7)

Changing out the optical drive on an eMac isn't quite as difficult as I'd thought though:

I believe Buck has the original eMac which is a bit harder to get to the innards.  I considered putting in a different hard drive in my Dad's but backed off when I saw what was involved. Using externals seemed a better option.

If you are thinking of doing the internal replacement, here is a page that describes it on your model:

http://www.wilko.com/emac/

This guy agrees that externals are the way to go:

Ah - missed that. There are two sorts of 800MHz models - one with the ATI graphics, one without. In the specs he listed, you can tell by the system bus; the later one had a 133MHz system bus.

So, yeah - Kris is right, the external is definitely an easier option. Of course, if you're adventurous, you can always go for the internal, but it's the sort of thing I'd be more likely to recommend only if you're very comfortable taking things apart, and don't tend to be one of those people who have an interesting little pile of "leftovers" when you're done! wink.gif I've taken apart the original iMacs to replace hard drives and optical drives - they're not much fun to work on, but if you follow the directions carefully, keep all the screws in separate little bowls etc., it's certainly not impossible. Of course I had nothing to lose when I did it - they were "rescue" machines from the recycling depot.

Hey Paddy: Thanks for your input. This eMac came w/ a Combo drive. Is this super Drive going to stand in my way? I ordered the following HD, hope it solves Moi problem. I know next to nothing on this subject.

Quantity: 1 PIODVR116DBK, $29.95 each
Pioneer DVR-116D-BK [Black Bezel] 'SuperDrive' up to 20X DVD+/-R, up to 8X DVD+/-RW, Up to 12X Dual Layer +/-R DL, up to 40X CDR/RW Burner.

P.S. Someone suggested hooking up their USB Play Station 2 to see if this would work as an External Drive.

That drive should work fine, Buck. With that drive you can burn DVD's as well as CD's, which you can't on a Combo, only CD's on Combo drives.

Don't know if the Playstation would recognize it.
