41 Pounds Lost; 6.5 Inches Less Waist...
« Reply #15 on: June 12, 2009, 11:07:38 AM »
I reached my "goal" today: 147 pounds/21.1 BMI.  I didn't actually know that was going to be my so-called "ideal weight," but ample unsolicited feedback from The Goddess and others indicate that I have indeed attained "lean and not-at-all-mean" status... I'm inclined to lose a little more, but I've been adding a little muscle so I may actually gain a few pounds of The Good Stuff vs. Fat.

That's 50 pounds lost since April 18, 2008. We haven't done any measurements but I can now easily fit in pants with a 32 waist...   eusa_dance.gif

Now my biggest problem is figuring out how much I should add to my daily caloric intake while maintaining my Girlish Figure. Now THAT'S a problem I don't mind having!

Maybe I can have one beer with a meal instead of the six ounces I had been occasionally allowing myself...

My hat's off to you, Mayo!  I've been (successfully!) fighting my weight my whole life, and man, do I ever envy people who have a "fast" metabolism!  One of the "secrets" to maintaining your svelt belt line, will be to get yourself into some sort of an exercise routine; I got started about 3 years ago because of my blood pressure, and it's just become a daily part of my life.  And, although I don't "get off" on it. like some jocks do, about a month ago, I inadvertently took up a new "sport", that I've been calling "stair surfing", in which I cracked one of the short ribs in my back, and then 5 days later, broke it when I sneezed. . . Geez, talk about hurting!  The doctor told me not to exercise because of the possibility of puncturing a lung, and, much to my dismay, I found that I really missed doing them.  I just got to start again, 5 days ago, and was pretty pleased to find that I had "backslid" much.  The doc said that it was lucky that I was in such good shape, because it could have been much worse. . . I have to admit that I have a much easier time with the weight, now that I have broken my "Ben & Jerry's addiction"; for about 15 years I ate a pint a night!  I'm convinced that it should be a controlled substance! biggrin.gif

Congrats Mayo!  That's a lot in a short time period. Usually 10 lbs a month is average so you really burned it off fast.

For me, the fight has been since birth with a major success about 25 years ago when I changed my diet.  But now that I've found swimming, the struggle is much easier. I'm now rather underweight for my height, but it feels good. smile.gif

Having a treat now and then makes it bearable.

Kris, thanks for the kudos but you must have misread my post... I started my diet in April 2008, not 2009. During the first 10 months or so I averaged around 1.25 pounds lost per week; I haven't bothered to figure out how it works out now.

I think that when it comes to dieting that slow and steady wins the race... People tend to place too much emphasis on losing excess weight fast and that is very, very difficult for most people to accomplish, And more than a few studies show that most people who do lose wait quickly gain it all back... and then some.

I think that a main reason I have been successful so far is that I modified the Sonoma Diet a bit so that it worked better for me. (Mainly adding a few more carbs... and I prefer ale to wine!) By taking over a year I have slowly developed new eating and exercising habits that I think will make it possible for me to maintain my new weight. I simply have Zero Interest in returning to my Old Ways.

I've also been receiving a lot of positive support from the various women in my life; in recent weeks I have been referred to as "hunky," "buff," "thin," and simply "lean machine" (something I never imagined hearing in a thousand years...) along with a good bit more hugging and squeezing than I recall experiencing in the past... My wife is also enjoying sleeping with a slim, younger man; she's the lady that is really getting to enjoy the fruits of my dieting labors... A guy would have to be crazy to choose French fries over that!

Mayo,

You are an inspiration.  My weight has gradually risen in the past two years and I am having a terrible time getting started trying to lose.  sos.gif

YUP, I did misread your post. Much better for you in the long run that you did it slowly. That is more healthy and more likely to be maintained since you obviously changed your total eating habits to something you could sustain over time. Bravo!

And you are so right about food not being as important as the compliments, physical improvement and psychological uplift that comes with weight loss.  yes.gif

I can't address losing weight but only maintaining it. I don't know from diets. I eat and move around. I don't watch what I eat I just eat what I want in proportion to my activity. When I was bicycling food consumption was a constant. Any deviation from a steady intake of food peddling 200 miles a per day and the following day I couldn't go as far/fast or with the same level of enthusiasm. I'm about 10 pounds lighter now @ 175 than I was in 1986 when i had to wear baggy pants to get my huge legs covered. I've lost the mass and exercise for tone and balance rather than bulk. i warm up when I wake up. I walk my dog every day at escalating paces. When I can, i watch the health channel and follow whatever they're doing just for the fun of it. When time allows I meet a friend for a little Jeet Kune Do and occasionally I'll join a local group for a tai chi session. I used to run, swim, and compete but I don't have the drive anymore. Although the tai chi sessions are in a group there is no competition. We don't drink as a rule, but we do like to party, and our occasional extravagances never seem to add or subtract from endurance or body fat. It's a lifestyle not a plan or a need, i can feel what i eat and drink. I can eat and drink with the best of them but i don't crave for anything. I love fine food and savor the flavor. I had a great Eggplant from the garden in a Parmesan dish with meat balls, a salad and 16 oz. of water for dinner. I like to grow my own food and cook, lately i get the best recipes from the food channels TV show Diners Drive-ins and Dives/
We enjoy the Food channel and learn a lot about technique from watching how others prepare food. We eat lunches out quite often, business seems be be about meeting people for lunch these days. It's great to find new exotic places with interesting menus. Our latest new evening favorite is a Brazilian Barbecue spot. We have many restaurants here and great pizzas. if I have one weakness it's a thin crust pizza and a Sam Adams Winter stock beer...and I can have it delivered!! wink.gif

I'm having trouble maintaining my weight... I keep losing it!

This morning I was 144 pounds. The lightest I remember weighing in my adult life was 143 pounds thirty years ago when I was vegan... (Fat vegans do not exist...)

I don't think that I am too skinny...yet. My body seems to be achieving its ideal weight without input from me...

I thought that drinking up to one ale a day (I don't drink every day...) would be enough to maintain my weight. But it looks like I need to add more carbs...

What A Shame! my wife says to me. (Me thinks that she is a tad jealous...)

I shouldn't be surprised that in the rare instance that I omit a qualifier when posting something that someone will point out that they know a fat vegan. Yes, I suppose that there are obese vegans out there: My Bad for not writing that there are few fat vegans, at least in my experience... The people that I have known that are vegetarian or vegan tend to be very health-conscious people who are decidedly not overweight.

This reminds me of a conversation that I had with my father almost fifty years ago. He had a friend who owned one of the fancier restaurants in Monterey, California. (I think that it was called Gallatin's, but don't quote me on that... The fellow was a vegetarian, which in the 50s and early 60s was considered by many (glad I didn't neglect to qualify my statement!) to be a terribly eccentric lifestyle choice.

Well, my father's friend died when he was around 62 years old, so that seemed to prove that being a vegetarian led to an early death, or something along those lines... HAHAHA. I've noticed that people who like to indulge in junk food and the like seem predisposed to disparage others who make an effort to live a healthier lifestyle... Even when those who put-down vegetarians are suffering from health issues that are the result of their unhealthy lifestyle choices, my father being an excellent example.

At any rate, if your friend's weight problem is not caused by a physical condition then your friend has to really work at it! Not having high-saturated fat foods in your diet like meat and dairy products means you have to eat a lot of high-calorie vegetable fats and/or carbs to get enough calories to become obese.

If one ale doesn't do it try two! wink.gif

When you get where you want to be experiment. Eat everything that you want and move proportionately to your consumption. It makes life so much more fun. Try the Apple/Nikki challenge and use an ipod/iphone with music and a good pair of running shoes to work off the Pleasure Food. It works for me! ...except I wear New Balance sneakers. wink.gif

Think about it... you get to eat everything the Cliff House can serve on a plate and never gain another unwanted pound. It's not how much food your willing to sacrifice, it's how much activity your willing to expend to keep in balance. hi.gif
