Old iMac with os 9, to give away
« on: March 25, 2009, 08:09:09 AM »
There is an old iMac with OS 9 on it upstairs which nobody uses any more, so I want to give it to the local school.
With OS 9, there is no "Secure Empty Trash", and there are a lot of pictures of our grandkids when they were babies on it and music and some other innocuous stuff that I would like to erase permanently.
But I want to leave the programs on it, there are no Adobe or expensive programs, just regular stuff like Graphic Converter and things like that which I dont want to erase.
Just really the pictures and music I want off.  There is no banking or password stuff on it either.
Is just moving those folders to the trash and emptying it sufficient?
Thanks,
Jane

If there is nothing on there that is potentially sensitive, then yes.

However, be aware that many school districts these days refuse to accept computers that are older than 3 or 4 years. There is practically nothing they would be able to do with that computer; )S 9 does not even have any modern Web browsers available for it.

I'm going to try and sell one just like that for $50 next time we have a cooperative garage sale; and if someone makes me an offer they'll probably get it.  I've got the memory topped off (512Meg) and OS 10.2 installed.  I'm going to have some iMAC G5's for sale this summer or fall and they'll probably go for $50 from the school district.  If you had some good kids stuff (educational games and such) to go with it you might find a preschool to take it!

Thank you,
I know its too old to do much in the computer room at the school(one of our others is in there), but this one could be used in the K or 1st grade for spelling and basic word processing.  Sort of teaching the little ones just how to get used to the mouse and menus and such.
These are set up in the back of the classroom, and the ones for the net are in the computer room at the side of the library.
Most of the second grade and up, kids(like our grandson)are very computer literate, and wouldnt have a use for these old iMacs.
Once in a while there is a family who cannot afford any computer and Ive given a couple of old PCs that Ive fixed up, to them(thru the school, they determine who really needs one).

So I will just take the pictures and music and documents off.
