I found how to reset the SMC on my unruly 2,5 year old on a site called eHow, not sure about the exect URL but Google search "eHow" and you'll get to it.
The following might be useful for other MBP users in the same boat as I;
Before you reset the SMC, try to re-start your computer by either using Force Quit (Command+Option+Escape), Re-start (Control+Command+Power) or Force Shut Down (Hold down the Power Button for 10 seconds). If these don't work, you can attempt to reset the SMC. Resetting the SMC is NOT used to fix an unresponsive issue, and should be done with caution.
Turn off your computer.
Disconnect the AC adaptor. Next, remove the battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Replace battery and connect computer to AC adaptor.
Press power button to turn on computer. The SMC has now been reset and your problem may have been resolved. Hopefully, your problem has been solved and you don't need to get your mac repaired or purchase a new motherboard.This has worked for my machine
