Hi everyone,

Smiley's MacBook-Pro died... well at least the monitor did sad.gif
Actually... not even the monitor since they replaced it but that didn't work.
It seems to be a connection on the motherboard and to have it replaced they had to replace the entire motherboard, costing us around £800 which is to my feeling not worth the cost.
Even more since they said we only have a warranty of 3 months I think it was, so what if it fails again after that.

Now we are trying to think what to do with the computer itself.
I know I can start it up using the FireWire disk mode to access her stuff, or we can hook up an external monitor which seems to work.
We don't have an external monitor though, and we are probably not going to get one just for this reason.
We will be getting a Home Theatre Projector soon, but this one does not have the resolution supported for the computer so I'm not sure if it will work, and how (you need a Media projector for this).

So what will we do with the computer dntknw.gif

Now I was wondering if we could access the DVD player from that computer using FireWire disk mode?
Which would be good as that computer is Region 1 (not to forget has optical out).
Also, can we access the webcam somehow?

I once found an article talking about connecting another portable computer up through IP (internet?, so you can use that ones monitor.
Is there any way you can do this? (so I can link up my own Powerbook and use that monitor for the MB)

Not sure what OS is on all your Macs, but Screen Sharing is a snap in Leopard (although it can also be done in Tiger with sufficient patience, but with less capabilities). You can do anything you want to one Mac while viewing its screen on yours. Of course, that doesn't solve the inability to actually use the MBP by itself. I think you'll pretty much need to hook it up to some kind of monitor to make that practical.

FireWire mode, as I understand it, it simply make the Mac's hard drive available to another computer for access in copying/formatting/etc. I don't think it allows running any programs on that computer, in a meaningful way. But I could be wrong (again!).

Same for the webcam. You can see what it sees via Screen Sharing, easily, but I don't think it can be operated/controlled/viewed via FireWire.

IMHO, what you have is basically a mutant Mac mini. smile.gif

That program is part of Leopard right? that Screen Shareing program?
We don't run Leopard sad.gif
I don't even think you can do that since you'll have to install any screen sharing application first... but you need a monitor to do so.
I guess we could do something like that at her work.

The DVD (Region 1) doesn't matter anymore though.
I'm picking up a Blu-Ray player after work with Multi-Region DVD player smile.gif

So in the en... it will be FireWire Mode and copy her disk off (((sigh)))
Depending how she feels, I might take out the internal drive and put it in her FireWire case and than we have at least that.

Also, hopefully, there'll be more suggestions for sing the MBP. An external monitor should be quite inexpensive compared to the screen repair...

Screen Sharing is actually a part of the OS, even in Tiger. It's just easier and more powerful in Leopard. thumbup.gif

I didn't know it was part of Tiger?
Where is it to be found than?

Yesterday we bought a 1080p projector and today we hooked the computer's external display connection up to it.
At first we thought the computer was dead since it only showed the desktop... till I figured out that we were watching the 2nd desktop, not the main desktop (with all the icons on).
Searching the website to find out how we can make the 2nd monitor the main one without actually seeing the main desktop and... seems all you have to do is press 'F7' clap.gif

Worked like a charm biggrin.gif andddd... we now have full HD resolution since that's supported by the projector lol.

That projector may be a little limiting while at some café, especially an outside one, during a bright day! laughhard.gif And it might not work too well while sailing off shore in a small boat! Unless, of course, you have a very, very, very long and water proof extension cable... oops.gif

As for Screen Sharing, look in the Sharing pref panel. In Tiger it gives the 'admin' pretty complete control of the shared screen. It Leopard, the shared screen user can watch her mouse being moved and pointing to exactly what needs to done and where.
