And yet another way to see what size drive you have and how much is still available (There are usually multiple ways of doing the same thing on the Mac, pick the one you like best!):

1. Click on your Desktop (what is visible behind all the application's windows you might have running, or just Quit all applications. It's the image use see right after the Mac starts up, cold be almost any picture you or your Dad put there).
2. You are now in the "Finder." You can also tell by observing the word on the left-hand end of the Menu Bar at the top of the screen. That word will also show the name of the program/application that is currently active, even if there is no window open for it.
3. If one is not open, use the File menu to open a new window (almost always command-n for all programs).
4. On the left-hand side of that window is what is called a "side bar" because it's one the side and it's...well, it's not really a "bar," mine looks like a column...anyway...just look in there. smile.gif
5. Hopefully, there will be an item called "Applications."
6. Click once on that and you should see a group of uhmn...applications! Wow! How that group looks is up to you, they can be icon, a vertical list or a column (my favorite).
7. Somewhere in the group is an icon/name labeled "Disk Utility." Double-click that icon/name to open that program.

Now, all the above is probably stuff you already know, but it's very important to know how to get to all the programs and files that are on your Mac. And it's stuff you'll soon do by second nature, if not already. I promise not to post all that again...until next time, anyway! laugh.gif

Disk Utility is one of the easiest ways to get the information about your disks, that's why I have it easily available as an 'alias,' but that's another topic. Right now, with it running/open, you should see a list of all the disks/drives on or connected to your Mac. Now, here's the best part! The very top one is the main, primary, internal, most important drive you have. No searching, guessing, pondering, etc. (unless I'm wrong, of course!). Just click on the name of that first item in the list on the left-hand side of the window (side bar? dntknw.gif ). Now, look near the bottom of the window and you'll see all kinds of information, probably more than you ever want to see! But two of the pieces are labeled, quite conveniently, "Capacity" and "Available." That's the information others have requested in the few posts before this one.

BTW, Welcome Aboard, BG! I hope you are as much fun to work with as your Dad! clap.gif I think you taught him well! scram.gif

Pauline, looks like hard drive capacity (or lack thereof) is not the cause of your freezing problems. So...on to some basic trouble shooting.

Have you repaired permissions lately?

Go to Applications->Utilities->Disk Utility and then click on your HD (the partition, not the HD - the HD is listed, then the partition is indented slightly) and then click on Repair Disk Permissions. After you do that, you can also click on Verify Disk if you want to check that nothing is awry with your hard drive.

That's easy!
1. Push stick forward; houses get bigger.
2. Pull stick back; houses et smaller.
Simple!
And Paddy has just illustrated the main use of Disk Utility! Remember how to access it and where it is.

Verifying volume “Macintosh 80GB”
Verify volume failed with error Could not unmount disk
Now that is confusing. Been a while since I've used Tiger (10.4.x) but I don't think, even in that version, it was needed to "unmount" a disk just to "Verify" it. Nor is it possible to "Repair" a disk that one is booted on, the 'Repair' button should not even be usable (grayed out). dntknw.gif Therefore, I don't understand a message saying the disk could not be 'unmounted' since it wouldn't/shouldn't have been needed in the first place. Let me do some snooping at a few sites, especially Apple's, to see if that message indicates something logical.

In the meantime, please 'play around' with the "Help" menu and look into how to make a screen capture. Just enter something like "Screen capture" in the little text box that appears when you click on "Help." It may be best to make sure "Finder" is in that left-hand Menu Bar label. It's really not hard. I know you can do it. An image or two will do wonders in helping track down problems.

Be back later...maybe someone else will come along and explain things to both of us! However, this is the day they run the Kentucky Derby, so most folks may be watching that, right now...

Still searching, but I did find a comment about this error reported when a file on a disk is open. From your earlier reports, however, it appears that the internal drive/disk is all in one 'volume' not 'partitioned. On the other hand, do you perchance have another drive connected? Thinking.gif Was there anything in the Disk Utility side bar besides "Macintosh 80GB"? There was probably another item but it should have had a round, disk-looking icon for it. That would be the internal optic drive (CD/DVD reader/writer). That's fine, but was there anything else in that list? That's where a screen capture would be really great...

Also found a note saying that error reports from Disk Utility may not be as accurate as errors reported from using the OS Installer disk(s). OTOH, if the OS has been kept up-to-date, the errors should be more reliable.

More questions:
1. Did Dad leave you the Installer disk(s) that came with the computer?
2. The problems may have been extended by having to shutdown via the power button while other operations were going on. Do you see a "Force Quit" menu item under the Apple Menu? If so, select that item and see what the little window looks like. You don't need to actually use it to do anything yet, just get comfortable with it. wink.gif

Note to self: Consider discussing Safe Mode startup to do automatic disk checking.

if you don't have any repair CD/DVD's  techtool pro / diskwarrior /OSX DVD follow these simple instructions.

1. Restart the mac while pressing cmd s
2. Press [ cmd ]+[ s ] until the command prompt appears.
3. Type fsck -fy
4. When you get back the command prompt, repeat Step 3 until there are no additional repairs.
5. Type exit

just make sure you have a space between the k and the - in the command fsck(space)-fy

the exit command will bring you back to the restart mode and the bit map should be repaired.

good luck.
