Where to buy old Photoshop CS
« on: May 08, 2009, 12:40:22 AM »
My Photoshop 7 is so old that Adobe won't let me upgrade to CS4. They say I have to purchase a full version... ouch!
Is there somewhere safe where I can buy an old Mac version Photoshop CS, so I can upgrade from there to CS4. It'll save a few $100.

What, exactly do you need in CS4 that you don't now have? You may be able to save a ton of cash while using the skils you've already learned. Thinking.gif

Photoshop 7 won't work in Leopard, I've been told.
A new iMac is in the works and I have to upgrade my design apps.

Krissel,
I could use that Mac upgrade one being sold by Terrafound for $108.But they won't ship to Canada!
If there is anyone out there who would accept my shipment to them and forward it to me, I'd be glad to pay a fee!!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00...p;condition=new

Once I get the CS version, I can then get the next upgrade to CS4! :-)

(I'm out of town, so may not get back here in a few hours)

I posted a warning last September that CS3 would be the last Photoshop version eligible for a discounted upgrade from Photoshop 7. Adobe's upgrade policy has always allowed a certain number of releases before the upgrade option ends.

Do you need full Photoshop? I've recently seen Photoshop Elements selling for around $50. Photographers who do not require the layout and CMYK capabilities of CS4 should take a good look at Nikon Capture NX2, a very powerful image editor that does everything that most photographer's need... for less money and easier to use too.

Is that an answer to my questions in <post #3>?

I know PS 7 is powerful and CS3/4 is great, also. But, without knowing exactly what it is that those apps do andthat you need, it may be impossible to find an alternative. And that's what you may end up needing to do.

Elements can run many of Photoshops 'Actions.' It has layers. It therefore has adjustment, mask, fill, etc. layers. As a matter of fact, it has many of the functions of the full PS app, they are sometimes located or accessed differently. Of course, some are flat not available. Just depends on what you need and use. For even its full price, I don't think it can be beat.

If "page layout" is a need, Apple's Pages (part of the iWorks Suite, $79) is extremely powerful. While it comes with a multitude of templates, you can design a 'page' in just about any size you want, AFAIK. You can enter text and images anywhere you want and position them to the pixel.

I know these questions are not answering your real search, so just ignore me like most others, if you want! laughhard.gif salute.gif

Xairbusdriver,
I need a full Mac Photoshop CS. I'm a designer and need to be able to exchange PS files with my printer or other design agencies. PS Elements won't do.

Krissel,
I was out of town for a week and all the Amazon.com apps seem to now be gone.
I am surprised how many PS PC versions there are for sale, but no Mac ones.

Texas Mac Man,
Thanks for your suggestion. I'll try it. Although it seems a bit confusing at first glance.

Never knew this would be that difficult to buy an old version (CS or CS2) that would allow me to upgrade to CS4. Very bummer!

(Recap - Adobe won't let me upgrade my Photoshop 7 to CS4. I don't want to buy a full new version of CS4).

I finally got a hit through a Google Group for Photoshop CS. I could now upgrade to CS4 and save a few $100. Here is the email I received...

"I can provide you with a copy of Photoshop CS for Mac, with valid serial number. Shipping will be from xxx, California, so I guess that might be costly. Anyways, if you are still interested, drop me a line, with a fair offer."

How can I verify this is a legitimate non pirated product?
Will Adobe allow for transfer of license?

Have them tell you the serial number and then contact Adobe. They should be able to tell you if it valid. There is not usually any prohibition on selling the disks and their serial number as long as the original user notifies the developer. There may be another way, but if the seller blalks at this, ask them how they could verify the validity.

I'm betting they will either agree to help or simply stop communicating. rolleyes.gif

Raven, Adobe has a special form that the seller needs to fill out and send to you. You complete it and send it in to Adobe. I did this with several registered versions of Photoshop etc. when I sold them a couple of years ago on eBay. The line that makes me suspicious is "I can provide you with a copy of..." When I sold my Adobe software, I provided the original box, all documentation including the license, the original disks in cases with the serial number stickers and the license transfer form. Of course not everyone keeps the boxes (I don't any more because I don't have an attic any more!) but they should be able to provide you with everything else. If the price is significantly different from the average FULL version on eBay, then watch out. There are so many pirates out there, it isn't funny. Also, watch out for educational versions masquerading as full versions - a very common ploy.

The only recent Photoshop CS sale on eBay was for $199. CS2 has gone for $169, $237 and $339 - all new, full versions. Me? I'd buy off eBay - less risky. (I know that may sound odd, but it is - if you pay via PayPal etc., you are more protected than if you send some person off a Google list a check or money order) Look for a seller with a solid reputation. And they shouldn't charge you an arm and a leg to send software to Canada, either. A one pound package sent international first class is $10.31. UPS is sometimes not much more (depending on how far it's going, of course) and often way faster (Boston area to Toronto is 2 days!).

Well, when I asked the vendor for a serial number, the reply was" I had at least 3 bad incidents with serial numbers. Sorry I cant provide you that data. Good luck finding and buying Photo CS." Hmmm.

So, I keep looking. Strange that I can find MANY PS CS for Windows. A ton of PS 6 and 7s. But no CS for Macs!

I hate the idea of having to spend 800 Cdn bucks for a full CS4 version.
