My new retirement business card
« on: May 12, 2009, 08:02:10 PM »
Years ago a retired man gave me his retirement business card. Because it was unique, I saved it for a long time, but I've not been able to find it. I thought I would make, from memory, a similar card.

I did a Google search and found some possible good ideas for things to put on the card. The results are shown below for the front and rear of my card.

I plan to print the cards using the free Avery software and Avery card stock. Before I print, I thought I would get your review and opinions. Maybe I could improve or add to what's printed on the back of the cards.

Cheers, Tom

We both know that the second is wishful thinking. That leaves the first. Retirement is a loss, I think, if one does not keep busy. Never retire is my philosophy. As long as I can get prescription glasses that allow me to see critical focus through a lens I will never retire.

On the other hand, Take care and use the first one. Top.

My nickles worth given coming inflation.

Love the idea of a retirement business card. biggrin.gif Personally, I think retirement is pretty grand. No more getting up with the chickens unless we want to. Our "jobs" are now ones we choose through volunteering. Have to say, there are times when retired life is stressful and worrisome -- but that's true whether one is retired or not. So I like your card.

I think this card should reflect you, and I'd only suggest 2 things.

1. The colored background on the front. It's an odd color to my eyes, plus you'll be using a lot of ink printing the cards.
2. I abhor comic sans, and would *beg* you to replace it; but my hatred of this font is a real thing with me. wink.gif

Oh, and for safety sake .... why not pop your graphic into photoshop or something and blur that personal info on the front of the card while you have it up here?

Kimmer - I think you need to read this WSJ piece in order to properly appreciate COMIC SANS:

Edited to add:

There are bad types and good types, and the whole science and art of typography begins after the first category has been set aside.

I still get up between 5:00AM & 5:30AM. I have so many volunteer jobs - work one day a week at a food bank, on the staff of a single parent support group, habbitat for humanity, handyman, on the planning committee for 2 charity golf tournaments - that it seems that I work 40 hours per week.

The card is meant to be informative, but also humorous. Hence, the job title below my name & the info on the rear. I was not a professor. I was an engineer.

Re: Colored background - I did a search on Google images using the word "hammock" and found the graphic I used. Actually found three identical images, but with backgrounds of "orange" (the one I chose), lime green & pink. I chose orange because it's the closest color to a sandy beach.

Re: Comic sans font - Since the card is somewhat humorous, what better font to use than a comic font.
Cheers, Tom

Volunteer jobs - that's what I like about being retired. So you get up early by choice. I enjoy sleeping in until 7AM. biggrin.gif

Then I think you've met your goal; and I understand now about about the colored background. Sounds like your happy with your choice, so I say go for it.

Since this is a family board I can't really reply ... but someone should take that font to the outer forty and let it get trampled by a herd of elk and be lost to the world. laugh.gif

I found my grand-father's calling card, like they would leave at when calling on a person who was out.  It was so elegant and simple.  I will search it out.

I would go for simple elegance rather than comedy, but that is just me.

Black on white.  A smart font with a hint of a joke, makes it more P G Wodehouse and less "got this graphic off the internet" look!

Just make sure that every beginning tag has an ending tag to go with it.

[ quote name='Texas Mac Man' date='May 14 2009, 01:51 AM' post='162384']
[
[ code]The card is meant to be informative, but also humorous. Hence, the job title below my name & the info on the rear. I was not a professor. I was an engineer.[/code ]

Change the above to what's below (only remove the spaces in between the brackets and the word:

[ quote name='Texas Mac Man' date='May 14 2009, 01:51 AM' post='162384']
The card is meant to be informative, but also humorous. Hence, the job title below my name & the info on the rear. I was not a professor. I was an engineer.[ /quote]

and it will look like this:
