Remember, just because others may be having troubles, that doesn't, necessarily mean
you will have them, also. As stated in a recent post, many people report problems with the bare minimum of information! From what is
not said, one can only guess at why they had a problem.
(Sometimes, we even have to
assume are even talking about a Mac!)
Secondly, when updating/upgrading, it is always wise to keep a copy of the original app and, at least, its prefs file, more files, if you can find them. DO NOT delete those files, that may even make it impossible to do the update. But keeping a copy of the original (I just use the Finder's "Compress" function and leave the resulting file right there next to the original) is extremely fast and takes very little space on your drive. If things don't go well, it is usually a simple matter to delete the new version and uncompress the original and be back up to speed. Of course, if you install stuff immediately when it becomes available, you have absolutely nothing to base the decision on except faith in the developers ability to test the code on every conceivable combination of hardware and software around. That it won't work on several of those combinations should not come as the surprise it seems to continually illicit.
My method is just what I use, there are many others, some are as simple as waiting a few days/weeks/months/years(
). And use the experience of others, like
kbear to make your updates less traumatic. Of course, even then, you may have the single combination of hardware, software and karma that will break the new software! Just consider yourself "special!"
