iTunes 4.0.1 available via software update
« on: May 27, 2003, 04:15:48 PM »
From the Software update panel:
iTunes is the only software you'll ever need to build & manage your music collection on your Mac.

iTunes 4 features superior sound quality including support for MPEG-4 AAC audio. iTunes 4.0.1 includes a number of performance and network access enhancements, and only allows music sharing between computers using iTunes 4.0.1 or later on a local network (in the same subnet). If you have an Apple SuperDrive, you can archive your song files to a DVD disc as well as burn playlists to standard audio CDs to play in your car or home stereo.

7.1MB in size.

iTunes update disables Internet playlist sharing

Some people seem to be upset about this. smile.gif

I'm not. If this is what it takes to get more artists on iTunes Music, then I'm all for it.

I do think that's the reason for this release...Apple needed to plug up that hole.

The article reads:
QUOTE
and the mechanisms we put in place to secure that music against theft are working well -- music purchased from the iTunes Music Store can only be played on up to three authorized Macintosh computers, and there has been no breach of this security.

Does this include iPods as well.  What I mean is, does an iPod count as a "computer."  The article also says "Macintosh" computers...  IF I were to put my downloaded MP3s on my PC downstairs, would they not work?

What's to prevent people from burning multiple CDs of purchased music.  I know someday I may like to burn another copy of a purchased album....  CD's do get scratched up easily.  If I were to buy another Mac (which I plan to do after I get back from Europe) am I not allowed to put my purchased MP3s from Apple onto the new computer?  Or is that okay to do?

Does anyone know the answers to these questions?

Thanks!!
Jay

I know the answer to one of your questions... wink.gif

When you get a new Mac, you have to de-certify the old one and certify the new one. You use one of the iTunes menus to do that, can't remember which one...

I assume you mean "Deauthorize Computer" under the "advanced" menu.

So all I would do is transfer all my music to my new computer, deauthorize the old copy of iTunes, then authorize the new one?

Lets see if I actually remember to do this smile.gif

Thanks kps!

For whatever reason... you are allowed to put downloaded music on unlimited iPods.
You can only burn a few copies of any particular playlist of downloaded music (I can't remember the exact number off hand--- I think it is 10).  You can actually burn any particular song as many times as you want... It just has to be included in a slightly different playlist.

Incidentally, you can burn any downloaded song onto an audio CD and then re import it into iTunes.  There will be some loss of quality, but all the protection will be stripped from the song.   I say this as a curiosity... I can't imagine why you would want to do this legitimately.

I wouldn't want to do that.  I have no reason to burn a CD then reimport it...  All questions I asked are purely out of curiosity.

Thanks for the info.

That depends on whether you believe Apple or not   wink.gif

I suspect that the only real reason for the update was to disable internet music sharing, but Apple claims to have implemented  some "performance gains"

I think I have noticed the sound quality is better.  Not as wavy with the volume as before.

"IF I were to put my downloaded MP3s on my PC downstairs, would they not work?"

MP3 files would work just fine. They are not copy protected.

Music that you buy using iTunes does not get delivered to you in MP3 format. When you buy iTunes music you get an AAC file, not an MP3 file. Your PC downstairs can't play the AAC files.

"Incidentally, you can burn any downloaded song onto an audio CD and then re import it into iTunes. There will be some loss of quality, but all the protection will be stripped from the song."

There will be loss of quality if you burn the music to CD and reimport as MP3. There will not be loss of quality (beyond what has already been lost when you buy the music in the first place) if you burn the muisc to CD and reimport as AIFF.
A whole lot about me: www.xeromag.com/franklin.html

Of course Tacit is right about The quality issue... I should have been more specific.  I guess I just assumed that few people have enough hard drive space to store their music in AIFF format.

I know that many people have a lot more than I do, but my iTunes music collection consists of mostly MP3 at 160kbps, as well as some aac files from the Apple music store.  It takes up 8.42 GB.  I would hate to find out what that would be in AIFF format.

Didn't someone mentioned there was a software glitch that caused iTunes 4 to play with fluctuations in the sound volume?
(Gosh, do i feel smart, saying it like this) B)

Maybe that's corrected to?
I updated it anyway.
