Cheap (Free) Webpage Hosting?
« on: July 10, 2009, 07:06:28 AM »
I have a single webpage to honor my father and it's been hosted on Yahoo GeoCities for a number of years;  Nothing to brag about.  Apparently whatever I've been paying AT&T hasn't been enough to make Yahoo happy and now they want to take the thing down.  They've also been crying about how much I've got in Flickr even though somehow I thought I've been paying for that as well via AT&T.  They want $60 a year to continue to host that single page and as much as I honor the memory of my father that kind of sticks in my craw!

Anybody know of free or really cheap places to place a page like this?

I was going to ask the same question. I have several Mac sites & several personal sites on Geocities. Some have been on Geocities for over 10 years. It's going to be a pain to move them to another host. The web hosting has always been free, but I guess it these tough economic times, companies can no longer provide free services.  The $60 is for the first year; thereafter it's $120 per year.
Cheers, Tom

Your ISP should make some space available to you for a website, it should be free. Of course your dealing with the vampirehost, but i do believe even at&t has this basic service

When it was Southwestern Bell it did have space that I never used.  When AT&T took over they offered space at Yahoo.  I had a wild thought to check with Google as I have a seldom used Gmail account and they do have this service available (don't know the limits):

Didn't get the links in yet but it only took a half-hour or so of messing about!

I agree with sandbox! I've never heard of an ISP not providing at least a minimum amount of space for a 'home' page. It may not be much, but surely enough for at least your needs. But I'm also not aware of what the connection between Yahoo/Flicker might be with any ISP, AT&T included. I have sincere suspicions about any 'free' web space from any source. Even space we pay for (from your ISP) may not be as permanent as we may think. After all, these companies are not usually philanthropic organizations. wink.gif

SB,

I was going to sign up for free web space with TWC RoadRunner.

Then I looked at the AGREEMENT. It was MANY pages of fine print, with bunches of caveats that protect them, and almost nothing to protect me.

NO—WAYYYYYYYYYYYY!

So, watch out for the FREE stuff!

EDIT: Found the info. If so, I'll have to see what my friend wants to do about her site. I don't have the files any longer.

I hear you Jack, I have never relied on the space provided by my ISP's. When I was with Earthlink i did use the space provided to set up pages and odds and ends. Now on .rr.com myself I haven't even looked into the space. With server space so low... example 75mb for $25 a year I'd rather have my own space.
I build more than just a page so my requirements are different.

ATT does indeed offer webspace. I have a memorial site for my brother on their "free" space.

Did you see this page from Yahoo GeoCities?
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/geocities...e/close-07.html

I'm going to try one (or more) of the suggested free web hosting services.

Apparently only for people with AT&T.NET and not sbcglobal.net like I have!

I ended up moving several of my sites to Google (free) web hosting.  Here's a review http://hubpages.com/hub/Google-Free-Hosting
I was able to copy the HTML source & paste it on the Google page creator. Wasn't quite as easy to edit and add images as the GeoCities File Manager.
