What version?
How have you been 'dumping' the cache?
Any particular site(s)?
Have you tried moving its plist out of the Preferences folder and restarting Safari?

User->Library->Preferences->com.apple.Safari.plist is where they live, in case you're wondering.

Let us know if that works - if not, then there are a bunch of other things to try.

BTW - is it hanging (spinning beach ball, refusing to do anything) or actually crashing (quitting by itself)? If it's still doing it after you've chucked the .plist file, then please post the crash log. Sometimes it's possible to identify a culprit that way.

Is there a reason you have not upgraded to Safari 3? I don't think you will be able to run version 4 as it requires an intel cpu. You can still get version 3.2.3 (I hope) < here>. Note that it will also require a Security Update 2009-002.

I was running Safari 4.xx on my G5 iMac until it fell down and broke itself....   Had no problems running Safari and never had a problem with it.

safari is not in the plist list.
[attachment=1533:Picture_11.png] this is the entry on the crash log from when it last crashed. there is a whole lot more on the safari crash log, nearly 10 photo shots to cover it all!!. is this enough info to help? the system rarely freezes now and the spinning beach ball has long gone. safari just shuts down on its own. only the issue with the clock reverting back to 01.01.1970 still exists despite new PRAM battery.
there is no reason for not upgrading to safari 3 other than george's advice!! pauline

safari is not in the plist list.
That could very well be the problem. I assume you looked in your own user folder/Library/Preferences directory. I suppose the .plist might be in the System's Preferences folder, but I would think every user should have its own file. At any rate, that plist contains some fairly critical info that could easily confuse Safari when it is missing. Coincidentally, there may be a connection with your clock and the Safari problem. There are dates in the plist file that should be before the computers date/time. With your system clock being well before the interweb, much less Safari, it is slightly possible that is part of the problem. This connection,  of course, assumes that there actually is a "com.apple.Safari.plist" file somewhere in your Library.
[attachment=1534:com.appl...ist_path.gif]

Not to second guess Sir George, but why not live a little dangerously and install the 3.2.3 version and see if there are fewer problems. My personal habit is to first make an archive of any app that I plan on upgrading before doing the actual download of the new version. "Better paranoid than sorry!" tease.gif

As for the crash log, it appears that most of the info involves things other than Safari (perhaps an HP printer?). It is also strange that the log reports attempts to access what appears to be Intel boot files. Being a PPC, those would be of little use, AFAIK. You should also have a crash log specifically for Safari. Open "Console" (should be in your Utilities folder). In the left-hand pane click the disclosure triangle next to "LOG FILES." Below that should be an item named "~/Library/Logs" with its own disclosure triangle, click that to see the next list. Now, look for an item called "CrashReporter." Again, there is a disclosure triangle, when it is clicked to show the list, there should probably be list of reports for specific apps. Mine has a list of several Safari crashes named similarly to Safari_YEAR_MONTH_DAY_UTCtimeInHoursMinutesSeconds_NAME OF YOUR COMPUTER.crash. Mine are sorted by year, month, day, time (thus the date/time format), the last one being the most current. Perhaps a listing of the first ~15 lines of that report might be of help. BTW, my Safari crashes point to an add-on, site blocker (AdBlock) as causing most of my crashes.

Pauline, you're running a version of Safari that's over 3 years out of date - I'd update it. I have no idea why anyone, including your Dad, would tell you not to. It has become progressively more stable and fast with each update.

But - a few other questions:

1. Do you have an HP printer? If not, definitely uninstall EVERY bit of HP software that you can find. I did a search on HPEventhandler and it shows up in a lot of crash logs, along with a lot of complaints about HP software in general. If you do have an HP printer, you may want to try uninstalling it and its software anyway. See if there is updated software available from HP - note the version number of the existing software before trashing it. However, we really do need the entire crash log - just copy and paste it here - there's no need for a screen shot. wink.gif

2. Look for the Safari .plist file again - look for it yourself in the Finder window. Make sure you're looking in the USER Library->preferences. It is NOT in the main Library. BTW - my Spotlight didn't find it - not a reliable way to look for it, in case that's what you did.

What version of OS 10.4 are you using? You should use 10.4.11 - the most recent. Run software update and see what it says. I'm not saying to blindly update everything - just let us know exactly where you're at with your OS etc. (If you add that to your profile, it will help)

OK, now quit Safari, move that plist onto your Desktop and restart Safari. See if things are any better.

Next, download the newer version that will run on your machine.

Select your old version of Safari in a Finder window, use the "Compress" menu item in the File menu (it may be called "Archive" in your OS).

Finally, install the newer version of Safari and try it. If you don't like it, you can still go back to the original one by deleting the new one and double-clicking the 'archived' file. wink.gif

If you do like it, tell your dad to "Get a grip! Install a newer version of Safari!" tease.gif

I'd do as Jim says - archive the old Safari and go ahead and download and install the newer version.

Once fixed, you might consider downloading Firefox to have as a backup.
