safari driving me insane
« Reply #15 on: July 16, 2009, 01:35:59 AM »
Looks to me like two problems going on:

1. An outdated Safari plugin or input manager, and

2. A problem with the Hewlett-Packard SmartX software.

The first problem can be resolved by removing things from the Safari Plug-ins and Input Managers folder. Look at Input Managers first. Open your hard drive, look in the Library folder on the top level of the hard drive (NOT the Library folder in your home folder) for a folder named Input Managers. If there's anything in the Input Managers folder, move it to the Desktop and restart.

The second problem can be fixed by using the HP printer software installer to uninstall, then reinstall, the HP software.

You might want to figure out what's actually in that Ecamm folder - is it anything to do with any of these apps?

http://www.ecamm.com/

Regardless, I found a reference from 2007 noting Safari (and Firefox) crashes with it installed, so drag it out onto the desktop and restart Safari. Given the age of your copy of Safari, it's quite possible that this is the culprit.

Directions for removing plug-ins, if the ecamm folder removal doesn't do the trick:

Pauline, I think you need to try posting that again - we can't see it. wink.gif

Did you follow the instructions in the link I posted and remove all the Safari plugins? There may be other things besides ecamm crashing Safari, as tacit noted.

And have you downloaded and installed the newer version of Safari??

Once fixed, you might consider downloading Firefox to have as a backup.

I suggest another related strategy:

Install Firefox [the most recent version that works w/ your OS], Import all the 'stuff' from Safari [Bookmarks, et.al.] and use FF as your main browser, keeping Safari for use as your backup on the rare occasions when a site doesn't work properly in FF.

Would that be a new version of FF or one as old as the Safari you were using? tease.gif

BTW, if you start swapping browsers, get a good bookmarking app. That way you can switch and swap without ever losing any bookmarks. And they'll always be arranged the way you want and are familiar. wink.gif

"Castaway" was only a movie, any resemblance to reality was purely coincidental. tongue.gif

Question remains, why did you never get a newer version of Safari? Afraid dad might find out? eek2.gif yes.gif Thinking.gif

Jim likes URL Manager Pro. He's been very restrained, not mentioning it by name...yet. wink.gif

I have been using Foxmarks for a while now and am very happy with it. It's available for Firefox, Safari and Internet Exploder (for the masochists out there). It keeps all of your bookmarks online which is handy for users of multiple machines.

Yes, I'm still around.  A four letter word has been getting in the way of things recently wink.gif

Foxmarks is now called XMarks as of March, apparently:

http://www.xmarks.com/

Looks really interesting - and it's FREE! Must check it out - when I have a bit more time. tongue.gif (I'm afraid the four letter word getting in my way of late has been WORK...)
