Is it Typical For A Flatbed Scanner Light To Remain On?
« on: July 13, 2009, 02:58:33 PM »
Seeing as how I am moving toward as "paperless" an office as possible (mainly thanks to DEVONthink Pro Office...) I am using a flatbed scanner that a friend gave me a year or two ago...

I have noticed that the scanning light source appears to remain on even when the scanner is not in use.  There is no "on/off" switch and the power supply cord does not detach from the back of the unit. Epson says that the scanner goes into a "power saving" mode after a period of time but I am concerned that the constant burning of the light source will cause it to wear out prematurely.

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of scanner who can illuminate me? (Pun intended...)

My Epson scanner/printer combo also keeps its light on for about 5 minutes after my scan.

The lamp in my scanner is always on when the computer is on; I haven't checked to see if it turns off when I power-down my iMac...

Lamp on our Brother MFC has settings for how long it remains on, but I've never bothered to change it. Perhaps your Epson has a Prefs Pane or just a preferences window? It sounds like it is 'recognizing' that your computer is on and it just can't wait to be of assistance! It may already know about your 'paperless' quest and just wants to make sure you don't also want to go 'scanless!' tease.gif You know these things have (devilish?) little minds of their own...eek2.gif

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

I cannot find a preference setting; I even downloaded and installed Epson Scan to see if that offered any control over the scanner... and it doesn't.

Uhmnnn...

I suppose there is considerable light 'leakage' from this thing. You might try inserting a couple of sheets of black felt, somewhat larger than the scan area, to block most of that light. Or, if you have any solar powered devices, you might be able to keep them running by laying their photo cells on the scanner platform. I agree, of course, that the scanner makes a rather large and expensive 'night light.'

Of course, there is always duct tape. Careful placement around the perimeter of the lid would probably stop the light leakage and you could get a little double-duty out of the scanner as a leaf or flower press/drier/flattener. dntknw.gif

I did find one non-Epson mention of this phenomenon: <The lamp stays on all the time, is this normal?> "Answer" was, "Yes, as long as the scanner is on." Note, no specific brand/model/age/interface was even mentioned. "He who paints with a broad brush often gets splattered!" rolleyes.gif

Also mentioned was the usual life expectancy of the bulbs of 10,000 hours (not quite a year and two months...). However, I suspect that yours uses LEDs for light output and the MTBF would be considerably longer. dntknw.gif

Mine is an old one, its an Epson CX5400, Ive never timed how long the light stays on, but I think its 3 to 5 minutes. Nothing in the controlling software to change it though.
When I go to use it, it always gives me a message asking me to wait till it warms up.

Is this the Epson 1260 that is listed under your avatar?

If so, I think that is the model my Dad has. Next time I visit the folks I'll check it out. He doesn't use it much so it is always off and probably unplugged. I know it isn't throwing off any light.  smile.gif

I've got an Epson 1660 and it's on if my computer is on. So I plugged it into a power strip and control power from that.

dboh's post provided the solution, kinda...

Using a power strip isn't a viable option in this case, but unplugging the scanner's USB cable is..

Voila! The light is off!

And it wasn't about light leakage because it wasn't visible with the lid closed... it was about extending the life of the scanner.

Are you saying that you are now unplugging the USB cable to eliminate the light? I hope you either don't use the scanner often or that you have a very high quality receptacle (at both ends of the cable). I suspect the power switch method would be cheaper to replace than the receptacle...dntknw.gif YMMV. I'll be glad to run a multi-year test on your scanner for you, just PM  me and I'll give you my shipping address. Sorry, no COD's. wink.gif
