G4/400. 386 mb RAM. OS9.1
I just started using QX 4.11 after using 3.32 for years. (Yes, I know I'm behind!)
However, some things aren't working right. Can you help, please? ...

1) Every time I open QX4 I get this message -
"POCE extension requires POCE Responder and Color Sync2 or later. POCE will not be available"
I am not sure what this all means. I did notice that the POCE extension is enabled on the extension list.

2)  I also get another message from a Quicktime dialog box. It states it needs Quicktime software.
When I click CANCEL instead of CONTINUE, it starts my dial up service which I have to cancel again.
It tells me I need to do a "QT component install". Quit or Install.
How do I get rid of this message once and for all?

3) The most frustrating issue right now is I am trying to print out a large QX document on a legal size sheet as a proof for my customer, and can't do it! (The Print Boxes in QX4 are very confusing. In v3.32 it took 2 clicks to print a page on my Apple Laserwriter Select 360. Now it takes about 5 when I want to print from the multipurpose tray.)

I am trying to print a large document to fit a legal size sheet from the multipurpose tray. It's about a 48% reduction to fit. I can get it to print at 48%, and it accepts the legal sheet. BUT the image is off the sheet to one end, like it's trying to print on an 8 1/2" x 11" page. There is a blank part on the other end of the legal sheet. The image would fit if it just printed in the centre of the page.
I clicked on "Fit to Print Area" and also tried without it. Doesn't make a difference!

I do not want it to tile. I have gone into Page Description and Setup and all boxes show "legal" size. What else can I do to get my complete document to print on the legal sheet size? I have been stuck on this for a whole day!!

If I save this document in v3.32 and print it with the same specs as above, it works! The image is totally centered on one legal size page. So it must have something to do with a setting somewhere in v4.11.

I remember the POCE question coming up a while back, but a search does not turn it up (are the archives still available?) and I can't remember the answer!  Anybody else?

POCE is Pantone's color calibration software. Translated into English, here is what the error message means:

"Pantone makes color calibration software. Quark gave you a Pantone color calibration plugin. But you did not buy the Pantone calibration software. Quark's free plugin does not do anything if you do not buy and install Pantone's special software."

Just disable the POCE Quark XTension.

The QuickTime message is coming up because Quark uses QuickTime to read JPEG files, but when you installed QuickTime, you did a "minimum" install instead of a "full" install. You need to do a "full" install of QuickTime to get rid of that message. Just download the QuickTime installer for free from Apple's Web site, and do a "full" install.

In order to print to a special tray on a PostScript printer, you have to click the button labelled "Printer..." on the Quark Print dialog window. When you do, you'll get the old-fashioned Print dialog. Set your tray there.

I disabled POCE. That worked! One glitch fixed.
I will do the QT full install and report back.

Yes, I have clicked on the "Printer" button, and as I stated it accepts the legal sheet from the multipurpose tray.
No problem there.

In the Preview window of the printer dialog box the image is indicated by a blue line in the proper centered position on the page. BUT the image prints off the one end of the page. It is NOT centered!

Pages that print off-center or rotated from Quark sometimes indicate a bug in the printer's PPD, assuming it's a PostScript printer (I don't know if your printer is PostScript or not). Try using the "Generic" PPD from Quark, rather than the PPD for your printer, and see if that fixes the off-center problem.

Shoot... I am trying to use the Generic PPD, but now when I PRINT I get a message "Document cannot be printed on Laserwriter 360 (PS printer) because of a Postscript error". What's with that? It's about a 12 mb file.

I used to get that message the ODD time before, and would just click on TRY AGAIN and it printed. Not this time.
If I save the document in 3.32 and use QXv3, it prints!

I've spent a day and a half on this and it sucks!

Without knowing WHAT PostScript error occurred, it's impossible to say why you're getting the message.

If you check the box "Include Quark PostScript error handler," then you'll get a printout describing the PostScript error, which may give a clue about the problem.

Tacit, I did what you suggested.

I had tried something else... This is a two page file and deleted one page. I found the problem is on one page only.
So I started to print the problem page (It has a multi-layered street map, many ads with many fonts and logos) in sections.
When I printed parts of the page at different times, some print on centre. Some parts print off centre. Some parts cause Post script errors. Still haven't found the actual problem, but I think we're getting close if someone could explain these two error messages received at different times...

- Error detected from text box. Error limitcheck. Offending command stringwidth.
- Error detected from picture box. Error limitcheck. Offending command imagemask.

What's the secret???

"Error: Limitcheck" means some internal limitation of the printer has been reached. It has run out of memory, or it has encountered a path with too many points--something like that.

Limitcheck errors are often solved by simplifying the page; your page is simply too complex for your printer's capabilities.

Does the image that causes the error have a clipping path (a transparent background in Quark, or a Photoshop path)? If so, the path is probably too complex

Here's another obvious question. If it is a PS error, why does it only be a problem in QX v4.11 and not v3.32?

Quark 3 and Quark 4 generate different PostScript--especially if you have images with Quark-created paths or runaround.
