Unable to print anymore
« on: September 08, 2009, 06:04:30 PM »
I have a iMac using 10.5.8. and a laptop using 10.4.  I don't print all the time (once or twice a month for invoicing) so I'm not sure when my printing failed.  Had to be some time after my Airport Extreme or OS updated in the last month.  My printer is a Canon Pixma 780.  I'm unable to print from either computer now

I've updated printfab, tried uninstalling, reinstalling printer, unplugged printer from my Airport Extreme, restarted computer and printer.  I'm at a complete loss.  I've posted my question at Apples forums and no one is responding...can anyone here help

Couple of questions..

Can you get it to print a 'test' page through the 'maintenance' item for the printer?

Have you updated or reinstalled the latest/greatest printer driver from Epson Canon? doh.gif blush-anim-cl.gif wallbash.gif  (The hurried'er we go, the behind'er we get!!)

If you print so seldom it maybe that the print heads are clogged... try doing the 'clean' routine, also through the 'maintenance' items for the printer.

Good luck and let us know which, if any, help.

The printer in question is a Canon but your question is valid if you make the substitution.

Can you be more explicit about what you mean by being unable to print?
1. Are you getting any error messages?
2. Is the printer running paper through but not printing on it? That's a sure sign of dried up ink in the print head. Notorious of seldom used ink-jet printers.
3. Does the printer appear in the Print & FAX pref pane?
4. Are there any lights on the printer? What might they be and what do they indicate?
5. Does the printer make any noises when turned ON/OFF?
6. Have you tried a different ISB (I assume) cable?
7. Is the printer selected in the Print dialog?

Opinion: If all you print are invoices, especially black and white, there's no point in wasting money on ink carts. Laser printers are cheaper now than what ink jets cost a few years ago. Toner is already dry, so that will never be a problem. And the fixed toner is more water proof than the paper it's on! smile.gif A very usable, fast, multi-function laser (printer/scanner/copier/FAX) can be had for around $200-$250. And the per page costs will also be lower while looking more professional. thumbup.gif Others may have other opinions, but I never listen to them! laughhard.gif

RNKII - Yes I can print maintenance check, nozzle check, etc.  Latest drivers installed as well smile.gif

Xairbusdriver - All of your questions are great, sorry wasn't more explicit.  The printer is completely fine.  I actually plugged it in directly into the iMac last night and it printed great.  So it's something with the communication between the computers (ethernet connected and wireless) and the Airport Extreme correct?  Probably the next go around I'd do laser color, until then I have to get this to work. The error I get is a network error.  I'm heading home in a bit and I'll document exactly what the message is.  Last night when I was trying to mess with it, it would say:  printing, 100% THEN I'd get the network error.  Also when I head home, I'm going to reset the Airport Extreme which was recommended by someone else.

I'll keep you posted.  Thanks for your ideas and help

Ah! Not really a 'printer' problem. That's good news! clap.gif Let us know how the reset of the router does. I hope that does the trick, sometimes those things just have a mind of their own! OTOH, at least they still have one, I'm still looking for mine...I know it's around here, some place... blush-anim-cl.gif

laughhard.gif It's almost always the last thing you try that fixes a problem! smile.gif The trouble is we sometimes don't know exactly what the problem really is! You'd think someone would write a program to do just that!! wink.gif Until then just come to TS! clap.gif thumbup.gif cheer2.gif

Of course! Once you have fixed the problem, why would you try anything else?  wallbash.gif

Did you knote my use of "almost?" Some of us just have so much fun trouble-shooting that we don’t know when to stop! blush-anim-cl.gif laughhard.gif And half the time, we completely miss the little detail that the problem was even fixed until somewhat later in the process! rolleyes.gif doh.gif
