OT: What more to add to homepage?
« on: June 01, 2003, 08:33:14 AM »
Hi everyone,

Changed some of the pages, and added a "professional" section on my homepage/website, is it looking good? blush-anim-cl.gif
Or does anybody has more ideas on what i can add/change in order to "sell" myself to foreign companies?
And i don't mean like "add more artwork", i will be doing that wink.gif

Again, i'm open for suggestions.

I already re-designed the "banner" section.

Hi Marcel..smile.gif

You're off to a good start. The one thing I would have you work on is your English grammar/spelling. It's not bad mind you, and better than what many of our own highschool graduates can turn out, but if you can "fix" that, first impressions will be much better. I would say that most people will give you some slack for not having English as your first language, but if you never have to mention that fact or apologize for mistakes, then you're way ahead of the game.

I'm willing to help you with this if you contact me privately, and I'm betting there are others who will help also. Let me start you off by suggesting that you watch out of any slang words you may use....brainwash does not equal brainstorm. Brainwash means to control someones thoughts beyond their own ability to control them. Brainstorm means to think creatively about various means/methods/options. Brainstorm is the word you need to use on the page about how you created the music web site.

Keep at it...and let me know if I can help..smile.gif

see ya,
Diana

You have a good beginning as Diana said and yes, some corrections in English usage would certainly give it the finesse to attract some companies.

I do think that maybe brainwash is closer in meaning than brainstorm to what you are implying in that sentence, though I think a totally different description would be better. Something like "After a total immersion in the company's work processes, I realized  that flexo printing has it's own graphic rules that are very different from normal offset work..." might be smoother. You don't want to suggest that your mind is easily controlled. There was a very famous incident in the US many years ago when a presidential hopeful admitted to being "brainwashed", even somewhat jokingly, but it ruined his chances in the campaign, nonetheless.

My one other suggestion is to perhaps use more of an outline form for each company where you worked. The narrative is OK to a point but people (especially in the US) who are looking for employees are usually in a hurry and want to get the gist (basic idea/main part) of your experience fairly quickly. The listing of companies is good but then the first person description on each page may turn off someone who is not willing to read it thoroughly. I did enjoy some of the personal comments but perhaps limiting that on each page after listing the company, location, type of work, responsibilities, etc. would be quicker and easier to absorb.

I know you intend to add examples of your work which is ultimately the most important "selling point". And I don't want to discourage your natural way of communicating by writing of your experiences with some personal comments since it is you. Ultimately they would be hiring a person and not a description.

I'd also be happy to help you offline if you wish.  smile.gif

Woooow, thx Krissel and Diana, for offering help smile.gif

Well, about gramatica... i use Dreamweaver to check up spelling but i don't change everything he say.
Like, it seems that i easy put two words together as one, which Dreamweaver gives as error (like website, should be web site?) but than i don't correct it (cause "website" to me look more correct in use on this mather?).
I'm also thinking to change the entire thing, meaning the Design of that page and Smiley also hinted me that i should call the section "Portfolio" and not "Professional".
Smiley had some suggestions (she mailed me) so i'm gonna talk to her first.

I wouldn't rely on some of those dictionaries that tell you to separate things such as "website". It does that because the dictionary has not been updated with computer terminology. Even my email dictionary tells me that "email" is wrong.

Your best bet is to let one or two people who speak English natively read through the text and suggest any corrections or changes.
