The evil empire is at it again...busily creating a world that HAS to use Windows. Or so they think.

Who knows what M$ will do. As far as Explorer for the Mac is concerned....it wouldn't bother me a bit if they dropped it.  rolleyes.gif

I'm starting to put IE as a backup browser nowadays anyways since Camino made me see the light.

Wouldn't bother me a bit either, Gary - I almost never use it anymore - Safari is now my browser of choice. HOWEVER, and it's a big however, web standards are still not where they should be. How many sites have you stumbled across (particularly anything interactive) that just doesn't work unless you use IE? That's because people create these sites to conform to IE standards, not W3C standards. Micro$loth, despite being a member of the W3C, persists in creating a non-standards compliant browser.

http://news.com.com/2100-1023-941926.html?tag=cd_mh

An excerpt from the above link:

A few years ago, it was Web developers who organized and ranted against the browser makers, specifically Microsoft and Netscape, demanding standards-compliant software. Now, the browser makers and even the Web's premier standards organization are attributing many of the glitches to Web authors who write non-compliant code or tailor their code to work with market-leading browsers, specifically IE.

This phenomenon traps smaller browsers in a vicious circle: Because they have a limited following, Web authors don't write or test for them. When, as a result, Web sites don't work with the browser--or explicitly rule it out--surfers have a repeated incentive to give up and use Internet Explorer.

Beyond the basics

The person browsing with the latest Opera, Mozilla or Netscape browser will be able to access just about any site on the Web. But non-IE users are likely to start running into trouble once they start delving into a site's complex features and functionality.

And those complex features tend to be crucial when it comes to executing transactions on e-commerce sites.

"The Web is a chaotic place, and you will find no browser that can view all sites," said Hakon Lie, chief technology officer for Oslo, Norway-based Opera. "All browsers have this problem to some extent."

Some browsers have it more than others. Opera, for example, runs into trouble on several mainstream Web sites, including Salon.com and Apple Computer's Mac.com, that render perfectly in IE or Netscape.

Maybe M$ isn't so bad after all.  wallbash.gif

Try not to use IE anymore like the rest of you, so I say, L8R  clap.gif  harhar.gif

I use Netscape whenever I can. Alas there are a number of sites that are so IE specific that I have no alternative. This is not by accident and I understand this.

Alas, what to do?

I downloaded Safari last night ..but haven't really put it thru any major browsing....I have MSN as my ISP and they just came out with their MSN 8 for Mac's....so far it is working out well, but missing some of the features it has for (dirty word) pc's. I still cannot use the Mac/Apple email program though. I have tried every which way to configure the set up, with no luck...trish

Actually, from what I've read on the CSS lists, IE on the Mac has been one of the most CSS standards compliant browsers around. Unfortunately, none are perfect, and Safari has many known problems, also (it doesn't handle nested DIV's well).

I'd say the best way to 'handle' the problem is to keep demanding that WC3 demand cross-browser standards. Don't forget that browsers are not just for computers anymore, some people actually expect to be able to 'browse' on a cell phone screen! doh.gif So, standards absolutely must ke created and used. I don't think developers who make use of IE/M$ specific 'features' are the same ones who demand standards. They are purely after the dollar return that provides. Also, many companies don't care about standards, they just want to have the customer be able to use their site. This may be one of the few 'back doors' we can use to pressure standards use and even non-IE support.

my $.02...

And I still like not having to install component parts that I don't want; Composer, E-mail, etc. Just give me a browser, thank you very much! wallbash.gif

I hope MS will continue develop IE for Mac. I love IE. I have Safari and IE in my TiBook but I sue IE 90% of the surfing time. The only feature I can't leave without is the 'Scrapbook'....

Thanks!

Well... you did find the purr-fect use for that image Bill!

It's just a joke... (the kitten is probably looking at the nearby ball of yarn or something)... but "I" often feel that way when it comes to M$...  wallbash.gif

No tears shed here if IE goes "bye-bye"...  sleep1.gif

With apologies to cmteng for making fun of his "typo" -- it certainly was appropriate:

I cannot read TS at all on my AOL browser -- the text is all but unintelligible.  Is TS geared to IE?  I would love to get rid of AOL altogether -- Earthlink was recommended -- and although it is hard to make a switch after so many years, I probably will.

What Kelly said Lorraine... sad.gif

I can't use Netscape 4.76 here either... but Opera 5 works "almost" flawlessly... just some very minor glitches.
