Photoshop 7
« on: June 05, 2003, 05:29:15 PM »
I downloaded the 300+ megabyte trial version of Photoshop 7.  Years ago I bought PS 4 (when it first came out).

1. Text is great in PS 7

However, I always liked using Edit > Stroke on my text.  I can't find it in PS 7.

2. Blend tool is nice!
3. Healin  tool: haven't tried it yet, but I've seen the QT demo of it
4. History is a great feature
5. Extract is nic
6. Magnetic Lasso is a great feature, it's finally caught up with ClarisWorks paint!
7. Save for Web is a nice little timesaver

FILTERS

In PS 4, after I would use a filter, I liked being able to go to Filter > Fade [whichever one used].  I can't find that in PS 7

Lastly, does anyone know when PS 8 is coming out?  Is it worth waiting to upgrade?

Thanks.

Sounds like you haven't tried the best new feature, File Browser.

As for adding strokes to text, there are several ways. Once you have text on a layer, you can go to Layer>Layer Style, and then choose stroke.

The better way is to double-click on the layer of text, which will bring up the Layer Style window. That window is your gateway to thousands of options--you can use inner glow, outer glow, stroke, or double-click on "Styles" at the top left of the window to see a number of included styles. You can add to those by making your own or downloading vast numbers available for free on the web.

As for fading filter effect, if you apply those on a separate layer, you can adjust the opacity of that layer. I know that you can go to Edit>Fade Healing Brush after using it. That may well be true of other filters, I just don't use them much.

Trust me, the only limitation with Photoshop7 is your imagination.

Almost anything you want to do can be accomplished using several different approaches.  Nobody knows it all.

Yes, you are right!  File browsing is great!  I also discovered the hidden stroke command-- although not really hidden, since it makes more sense where it now is than it ever did in the Edit menu.  Lots of news stuff.  I like it!  clap.gif

Regarding your question about PS 8, the last I heard rumored, it was projected for perhaps late fall but would only support X.2.

In my eagerness to get you acquainted with the variety of ways to play with Stoke, I overlooked the simplest--the stroke command. Glad you found it.

When in the File Browser, check out the contextual menu (Control-Click) and you 'll find several nice options--that's where to do your rotations. The only tricky thing is that although the thumbnail rotates immediately, the file itself only rotates upon opening the next time.

What are you using Photoshop to do?

I mostly need Photoshop for cubic QTVRs.  My  output file is a photoshop file with several masks which I have to make absolutely seemless.  In cubicVRs, you take 3 to 6 fisheyes photos and stitch them together.

ex. of finished (but not top-quality) cubic VR: http://homepage.mac.com/aixa/ridgewd/vr.html
