DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO FIND GOOD LCD'S????
« on: June 06, 2003, 09:28:49 PM »
Hello Everyone,

Well here is a question for anyone who's interested.

I'm currently looking for a good quality, up to $330, 16-17" LCD flat panel.

Can anyone lead me to a good place to find one?

If anyone's got a LCD monitor (flat panel) please tell me what kind of brands are recommended.

THANKKKK YOUUU

Smiley, you're going to have a very hard time finding a new 17" LCD monitor for that price. I've had a quick look - the $345 price point is still littered with "house brand" and no-name monitors - some of which may actually be fine, because some of them are using the same components as the big names, but I certainly wouldn't buy one without seeing it!!

If you can manage $400, you might have a little more choice. And there is always eBay! There are LOTS of 17" LCD's available on eBay - you could probably get a good one for close to what you're willing to pay. BUT - you must do the legwork first - go to Best Buy and CompUSA and look at monitors and compare. What you like may be quite different than what someone else likes (you can see that in user reveiws - what some call fuzzy, others call sharp!). Then, when you have a good idea of what you like, AND what the retail prices are for the models you like, then you can start looking on eBay.

My opinion... Its not worth it.  I spend a lot of money on techie things just because I want them, but sometimes, I will wait until they are in a price range I think more fits the value of the product.  As an example, I just bought a canon ZR 60 Mini DV camcorder for about $500.  Something like this used to be more than double that price.

When it comes to LCD monitors, I love the one on My FP imac, But would I pay a huge premium to get one over a comparable CRT?  No.  There are many pros and Cons to LCDs over CRTs, but I think that overall, the pros slightly outweigh the cons.  That is.... until you see the price differential.  For now, I would still buy a CRT until the price of LCD comes in line with the CRTs.

I'm sure many will disagree with me. and that is fine.  In fact most will proabably disagree, and I hope they do.  The more people that buy the things, the sooner the price will drop  wink.gif

Well Steve, I'm totally a new tech want it all gadget kinda girl, but that doesnt mean i will buy everything. why i want a LCD monitor is because i think it's a good time to get it when my monitor right now is getting a bit sketchy. SO that is why.

Ok waiting for prices to go down? hmm yes that's true but how long can i wait when my monitor here is getting really annoying??? and plus when the prices go down that also means that theres something new to look for.

anyways that's my opinion and explanation biggrin.gif

Would a 15"monitor work for you?  I do most everything on a 12" iBook these days and I hardly ever use my 17" monitor.  For certain uses more screen real estate is indeed better, but for average computing i.e. Internet, e-mail, word processing etc. 12" seems like plenty of room to me and 15" is a nice compromise.

I think that CRTs still reign supreme for critical color correction work, but otherwise they are dinosaurs.  Big and heavy and chock full of bad stuff that typically gets dumped in a third world country.  Staring at what is essentially a TV screen vs. using an LCD is a no-brainer decision to me. I have found that the experience of using a computer is enhanced when viewing an LCD monitor, with the greatest benefit being the lack of eyestrain after using the monitor for several hours.

Costco has a variety of LCDs and many appear to be 15" monitors.  The great thing about Costco that along with typically low prices the store's return policy is Second To None, so if the monitor doesn't work-out you aren't stuck with it.

Or you can save your pennies and limp-along until your CRT implodes, when you may have enough $$$ for that 17".

Smiley, there is a Costco in Everett, one in Waltham, one in Danvers....you kind of need a car to get to one. They're big warehouse-style stores. You need a membership to shop in one - they cost $40/year, so unless you are going to be going there regularly, (and like shopping for LARGE quantities of things) it probably isn't worth it. Of course, if you know someone with a membership, then go with them! I may be going on Monday (not sure yet though - will depend on how much progress I make before on tasks around here) - if I see anything that looks reasonable and fits your price range I'll let you know. (Hey - maybe you can meet me at the Danvers store some day if there are any great deals to be had). I've a horribly busy next 10 days coming up, but after that I can certainly take a peak.

The Costco website ( http://www.costco.com ) doesn't list any particularly notable deals right now - Sylvania and Proview 17" models for $399 + tax. They usually have more of a selection in the store, though not a lot. And they're usually a model or two behind the latest, not that this is necessarily bad.

BestBuy occasionally has great deals - but again - you've got to go and look at them to choose one that suits you.

I recall hearing years ago that a TV tube does indeed implode because of the vacuum inside, and as a young boy I hoped to get the opportunity to see if it was true, but said opportunity never presented itself.  I believe that this may be a common fantasy among American Males, seeing as how I sometimes stumble upon TVs in the woods that are shot full of holes...

It appears that I should activate my signature, but heck if I can figure out how do it...  So here it is Smiley...

Hey there everyone!
well my lcd is now in shipping! sigh... so i went for a BENQ 17" lcd which the brand was formerly called ACER... anyways to make a long story short. After much hassle, I'll be getting an LCD soon! the final price? 339.99 smile.gif
