cdrom not working

my cdrom was working now it doesnt seem to want to mount the desktop.i have a 233mhz imac ,slot loading cdrom, 160ram.  i am pretty sure i have all the drivers\extensions.  and it still makes all the right noises and the cd is spinning.  apple cd player opens but shows no info or songs   i also donnot get an error message.  the apple system profiler say about cdrom driver  'no driver information availble' any help with this will be excellent     ps  icannot find myos8.5 install disk but am hoping to soon. oops.gif  oops.gif

Does it do this with ALL CD's (including software CD's)? If it is just doing it with audio/music CD's then it is possible that you don't have the Foreign File Access extension active. You need that for music CD's.

Have you zapped the PRAM?

Have you made sure that you don't have too many things going on at once? Apparently a CD will refuse to mount if you don't have enough free memory. Usually it kicks the CD back out though, in this case with no error message.

There are a few more options - but more info would help. Also, finding that system disk (or any other bootable disk, like Norton, Diskwarrior or Techtool) would help a lot - at least then we could get some idea if the iMac will boot from a CD.

Strange...I got an error message when I tried to post this (telling me to check my smtp settings!(?)) and then I had to preview the message because the submit button was grayed out and submitted it from the preview window. Only...there was no error the first time - I ended up with a double post. dry.gif

it does it with all cds [ including found boot cd]i have zapped pram and have no other apps running      anymore ideas[ other then the maybe unavoidable workshop visit ]would be great. i really think its not hardware      cheers o.p

As Paddy mentioned, about the only thing other than hardware at this point would be the extensions. Get into your Extensions Manager and make sure the following extensions are checked:

Apple CD/DVD Driver
Foreign File Access
UDF Volume Access

Also try this:

Press the Command, Option, and I keys when inserting the disk. The computer will try to make the disc available on the desktop as an ISO formatted disc instead of a UDF formatted disc. Continue to press these keys until you see the disc on the desktop.

If that doesn't work, it just may be hardware based. Could be a matter of cleaning the drive or an adjustment but most likely physical in nature.

If anyone else gets that MAIL ERROR with notice about SMTP server setting in this thread, please say so. Am trying to track down the problem. (I got it, too, Paddy).

Have disabled an item in the admin panel but don't know if it has cured it temporarily, completely, or not at all...
