Alert Message upon Startup-OS 10.2.6 ?

In the WAG, most desperate guess department, any chance that Sam inserted a DVD/CD that was from a different region and that somehow screwed things up? If so, zapping the PRAM may (should) reset/clear that.

You have inserted a disk containing no volumess that OSX can read. To
continue with the disk inserted, click ingnore.

The disk it is referring to is almost certainly not the Superdrive.

What does he have in his Login Items (in the System Preferences)? Most likely, some program is trying to mount a non-existant disk image (.dmg) file.

Tacit,

There is nothing in his Login Items. I thought that might be the case but it isn't.

I searched all his folders in vain. There still may be a non-existant or existant disk image (.dmg) file lying somewhere but I'll be darned if I can find it.

Fortunately, it doesn't bother any other users but I wish I could find out what is sending that message:

You have inserted a disk containing no volumess that OSX can read. To
continue with the disk inserted, click ingnore.

It bugs me.

Thanks Tacit.

I got that message once when I dragged a CD to the Disk Copy window.
I was experimenting and playing with 10.2. It wen away also after a few seconds.
I really don't know, but maybe check for a .dmg file and delete it?

Good find kelly...hope that can solve it, but /etc/hostconfic is a global config file...so why would it affect just one user...another mystery.

Another guess:

1-login as Sam
2-Finder/Preferences --check or uncheck 'mount removable media on desktop'
3-AppleMenu/ForceQuit/Relaunch Finder

repeat number 2 to set it for mount removable media.

Thanks Kelly!

I don't know. The document is a little different since it's for OSX.1. What do you think? Here's what i have.
It's a little different from what they suggest to copy and paste in there but ........who knows.

Take a look at that page and compare it to this(what I have) in Sam's thingy. OS 10.2 looks a little different doesn't it? It is a clue though. smile.gif

Gary. I don't really know. It just turned up in a search. smile.gif

Maybe copy and paste from the other User's File.

The one without the problem.

Maybe not your Admin File. smile.gif

The Apple technote is for fixing a problem with removable media not mounting when inserted. In your case, Gary, there is no disk and it's affecting only one out of three users.

When you deleted the original account and then transfered Sam's files to the new account, did you transfer the old Library folder?

If you did, you may have also transfered the problem.

FWIW, I just noticed I have two hostconfig files in my /etc directory. One is the system hostconfig file and another hostconfig~... not sure why there are two, but the second says created by Preference Panels. I'll assume that is the one read at login.

Neither of these has AUTODISKMOUNT= -REMOVABLE- showing and I have no problem mounting or removing removable media. So, go figure. Now I'm confused....<g>

...and what's with the long APPLETALK_HOSTNAME? It should be your computer's name as setup in Preferences/Sharing.

I did transfer it.

My computer's name in Preferences/sharing is named Administrator’s Computer so i don't know.

What do you think?

When I change sam's account to Administrator I don't get the message.
When I change him back to a normal user, the message returns

Does that indicate anything to you?

BTW, I used Cache Cleaner one time and now it won't take my Administrators password.

That's very interesting...

It seems like a permission problem of some sorts, probably on some background process.

autodiskmount runs as root. root and admin are members of the same group(wheel)...that may be the answer, but I'm not sure.

I don't know if you want to try this again...but here goes:

Delete the user
Create a new non admin user with the same(identical)* name as the deleted user
Transfer only the user created files and not the old user's Library folder

*[any old files you transfer to the new user will have the old name as the owner, so it's important]

then

Start adding back some of the library files, loging in and out inbetween to see if the message returns.
Add Preferences and Caches last or not at all
See if and when you get the message back

or

do not add anything from the old Lib folder to the newly created user, set up the user's environment from scratch. (provided the message issue is resolved)

I can't help you with the JCC issue, maybe the developer can be contacted.

As far as the Appletalk_hostname is concerned, I asked out of curiosity, I don''t think it's the cause of the problem. But if you want to change it, just go into the System Preferences/Sharing panel.

Does this computer have more than one hard drive (or more than one partition)?

Tacit,
The computer is a 933 Quicksilver. It has 2 HDDs.
One for OS10.2.6 and Classic 9.2.2, which is not partitioned and the other for OS 9.2.2 which is partitioned.

KPS,
I think the problem is solved. I don't know whether Cache cleaner cleaned out a file out of his Library Folder or not but after another round of repairing permissions again
I ran DiskWarrior 3 after repairing permissions and then again repaired permissions.

This file reappeared loose in his Home folder:

com.apple.preferencepan
               es. cache

I put it his Library folder and the message isn't reappearing.

I don't know if that was it or not. I had to change permissions so many times to get into his folders and then I had to change them back and then verify and repair permissions that I'm pretty confused at this stage of the game.

I'd like to here what you guys think.
