Need help With OS10.2.6- KPS might know
« on: June 09, 2003, 09:32:53 AM »
I have 3 users profiles on my configuation.

My son Sam is one of them.

When he logs in and his Desktop loads this message appears:

You have inserted a disk containing no volumess that OSX can read. To
continue with the disk inserted, click ingnore.

The problem is there is no CD in the Superdrive-CD tray.

Does anyone know what's going on here and how to get rid of the message?

I reposting this in case KPS comes along wacko.gif

You could try trashing the Finder preferences for that user and see if it helps.

Login to your account.

Use Find to search for Finder. You will get a list showing the results. Look for com.apple.finder.plist in the user folder that your son uses.

Trash that and then restart, logging in to his account.

I'll be back in a while i have to go somewhere.

 Trashing the prefs?

No. The worse thing is, you have to reset any custom settings.

Bruce,

Trashing the Finder preferences (com.apple.finder.plist) didn't help. sad.gif

Rebuild the desktop or clearing the pram. Tried either one yet?

I've done the desktop but never thought about pram in X. Fact can that be done in X?

I zapped the PRAM.

I created a new new user and Sam's stuuf was archived as a Disk image in Deleted Users. I put all his stuff back(took me almost all day) and I got the same message!  upset.gif

Repaired permissions and ran diskwarrior too.  mad.gif

I don't know why Sam is getting that at login...???

Some things to look at:

Is classic set to start at login? --wondering if it's looking for some classic disk long removed.

Check System Preferences/ CD's DVD's
Check System Preferences/ Login Items

You might try deleting some user caches(Sam's) in /Users/Sam/Library/Caches/, as they might have gotten corrupted. Also delete the desktop .DS_Store file.

I can't guarantee success as I don't know the cause of the problem. Haven't run across this before.

You might consider using this for the cache cleanup, just be careful what caches will be removed.

KPS,

Where do I find the desktop .DS_Store file? I did Find search for it and came up empty.

Oh, and are there any particular caches I should stay away from?

Thanks for your reply BTW. smile.gif

The .DS_Store file can be deleted while booted in OS 9. The one you want to delete is in /Users/Sam's Home directory/Desktop

or use the Terminal either as the admin:

rm /Users/Sam/Desktop/.DS_Store

or login as Sam:

cd Desktop
rm .DS_Store

The cache to remove may be this one...but I'm guessing:

com.apple.LaunchServices.UserCache.csstore

How do you feel about my guesses? wink.gif  I'd use Jaguar Cache Cleaner and do a light cleaning.

Remember, I don't know what's causing the message to keep appearing...all this may be in vain.
