What addressing app do you all use?

I have been using Addressix for some time now.

It works usually fine when using #10 envelopes, but frequently gives me fits when using smaller personal sized envelopes.

 wallbash.gif  mad.gif  tears.gif  wacko.gif  rant.gif  sos.gif  sos.gif

I need the following standard capabilities:

Upper left corner:
Return address (preferably choice of several standard ones).

Address:
Complete with bar coding and USPS shipping bar code.

An application similar to Addressix (that works).  Not a Widget.

Anybody got any good suggestions?

Jack, I'm not going to be much help because I've never done any bar coding and didn't know you could...

But, I do design my own envelopes in AppleWorks and use its Database/Mail Merge feature to print them for our Christmas cards as well as other envelopes throughout the year.  I use the 'Draw' module for designing the envelope and adjust the placement of the address according to the dimensions of the envelopes.

If you're familiar with that program and could run your envelopes through the printer separately for the bar codes, that might work???

Good luck!

Laurel

If you don't mind the expense, MS Word can fill your envelope needs. If you don't want to spend the bucks, Snail Mail (free) may fill the bill. It is no longer available from the developer but if you send me a private message with your email address, I can email it to you.

Jack,
MS Publisher might help, I use Pages but cannot find anywhere in Pages that caters for bar codes but then I have been known (on the odd occasion) to be wrong.

Jack,

I use Addressix and am quite happy with it, but I have only used #10 envelopes, so any help of mine is (even more) suspect.

Still, please provide a bit of detail as to what it is that is giving you grief, perhaps I can lend a bit solace until you choose another envelope app. BTW, are you using v1.4.10?

Also, have you contacted the developer?

Another free possibility (I haven't tried it myself) is NeoOffice.

Harv,

I am using 1.4.10 Addressix.

I have had this problem on several occasions, when using smaller envelopes.

I have received help on other occasions for this problem, but it's always been very esoteric, and I can never remember.

I have played around with Page Setup and the envelope size in Addressix ad infinitum.
It sometimes prints too low on the envelope, or too far to the left or right.
And, I am unable to select reverse feed.
It really doesn't need to be this complicataed.
Very frustrating indeed!

I am going to contact A-Sharp one more time.

Jack,

You might try this (if you have not)...

Prior to actually printing the envelope, go to File> Page Setup, and ensure that the "Format For" has your printer still selected in the drop down menu.

I'm wondering/guessing/hoping that your printer is no longer selected and that the default "Any Printer" has become reinstated.

If this is so, you may need to trash your .plist (Home/Library/Preferences/a-sharp.addressix.plist). But before doing that, let's see what the developer says or if just your making the above change helped...

Harv,

Jon emailed me a copy of Snail Mail. It's working fine for small envelopes.

And, after much experimenting and playing around with Addressix, I finally got it working also.
Just have to test before I use it to make sure it's working as hoped for.

Thanks!

Jon,

Thanks for Snail Mail.

And now I have two options for the future.

Jack,

Glad to hear that all is again right with the world.

And when you have a moment, please forward a copy of Snail Mail. Who knows, maybe I'll even give it a go: *??//pndrgnsvc // at // aol.com##

We've used Mariner Write many times, since you already have the info in the letter, it knows what goes where. dntknw.gif Most word processors have that capability built-in, I would think. Merging takes care of multiple envelopes, I guess.

But Address Book can also print envelopes, my wife has done that several times (even in Tiger). Multitudes of choices for envelopes/mailing labels/etc. I think it's free, also. smile.gif

I experimented with Address Book but couldn't find a way to get it to print bar codes. Am I missing something?

Just the bar codes! I suppose the Post Office uses those, but it doesn't matter when the carrier can't/won't read the address. rolleyes.gif On the other hand, bulk mailers do get a discount when those codes are used. Of course, the rest of us just get to pay a little bit more when/if we mail anything! Exactly who is the 'customer,' anyway... Thinking.gif

Specifically, however, AB does allow one to print 'images.' And, on envelopes, one might be able to insert a bar code as the "Country" field, which might not be convenient for overseas mailings. Thinking.gif But AB also allows printing envelopes sorted by Postal codes. Even that can help the PO, even if you don't get a discount.

I doubt that many of us actually are getting any discount for using a bar code, anyway. But if that is needed, I would assume, dangerous as that is, that any good bulk address printer would do that, as well as compute them, when printing. For serious addressing/mailing tasks, a paid service is much more efficient, IMHO. All they need is a plain text list of addresses. A secondary expense comes from paying double when the addresses aren't verified before being used or that become dated/invalid because of address changes/death/etc.

Sorry my suggestion won't help. sad.gif As someone once said,"Bar codes?" Neva use 'd 'em! tease.gif
