Help!Know Nothing-given a Mac
« Reply #15 on: June 10, 2003, 10:28:07 PM »
Evening All,
Trish, I am leaning toward MSN at this point.
WebTV costs $ 24.95 a month!  I don't know how you got such a good price.  Ryan, I have Cancer, the cost of medical care, prescriptions and treatment have depleted my funds.  I got the news today, my husband told me that our medical costs through his empoyer will increase across the board as of July 1st.  I cannot afford to do much more. I thank God that I have what little I do. I know that you probably think that the "old mac" should be ditched for a newer model and you are probably right.  Given our current financial circumstances, buying a computer is out of the question.  Right now, if I can get this computer up and running, I might be able to get the answers and information I need to help me get well. I need all the positive energy for my health.  I hope I have not forgotten any individual who has tried to help, if I have, I assure you it is unintentional. thanx.gif

Welcome new board member - - -
http://www.kan.org/6100 can provide answers to just about any questions you may have on 6100's - I think steven@kan.org earned his doctoral degreee on the 6100's
It would pay you to print out  just about every topic he's posted if you plan on keeping it - - - in particular his first hand experience on  upgrade possibilities.

As Kelly knows, I am running two 6100's which I brought up to a G3 level and can handle just about anything on the net  - (of course it helps if you're retired and have time for the rather slow download speeds - best I can get from my telephone service is 31200 bps with a 56k modem).

After your "kan.org excursion" go to http://www.technowarehousellc.com if you're interested in jazzing it up fro 60 to 300MHz for about $75 -

I have a lot of old parts laying around that I picked up on ebay - send me an email if you have a particular need.

Wishing you the best.
Mike

I noticed that 'techno' has only one 6100 processor upgrade currently in stock.  They do acquire both Sonnett and NewerTech parts so keep in touch with this site - Between the two - I think NewerTech has it all over Sonnett - although they went out of business a few years ago. Plenty of processors still available - ebay is also a good source.
Wishing you the best, again -
Mike

MrsLop,

Welcome to TechSurvivors which really is a caring community of Macers. Unfortunately, I cannot help  much with your 6100 as it has been many moons since I used one. However, I am a veteran of two "cancer wars" (not myself but my late wives) plus a research background in oncology especially bone marrow disease and would be happy to help you browse the internet for the various oncology sites (In addition I am married to an oncology resaerch nurse who is up-to-date on the latest research protocols).

If you can afford it, I would suggest buying a used Mac G3, G4, or an iMac as this will allow you to run OS X which that will facilitate your use of the computer. You don't have to be an expert as TS is available 24/7 and we give service with a smile. also look for a Mac User Group in your area and I am sure you will all sorts of Mac help there.

Welcome to Techsurvivors MrsLOP!  smile.gif

I know your concerns with the disease you have and think that even with the Mac you have you can get things that you want to accomplish done with what you have.  It (your Mac) will be slow, but information will still be accessible to you.

As Mike stated that he has a lot of stuff around for that Mac, so do I.  Help is near by.

Dial up internet access will be your best affordable bet, but if broadband is what you want, your Mac does have that capability.  it will need an adapter to convert the ethernet port from AAUI to RJ45.  Your Mac may not have a built in modem and if it does it will have what they call a Geoport modem.  Not the best, but will work.  An external modem would be best though.  Can you please tell us if you already have a modem or not?  And if so, if it is the one built in or an external one?  If an external one, what kind is it?

Also, if you know, how much memory does your 6100 have?

Wishing you the best in your quest for answers and a full recovery.

MrsLop, my belated welcome to TS... I don't have any new tips for you, just want to extend my best wishes. Please let us all know when you get your Mac connected. And by all means, ask any questions that come up.

MrsLop, Along with the others, please allow me to extend a most hearty welcome.gif to TechSurvivors.

Only rarely is a problem not resolved, none of us were born knowing this stuff, and it is for the likes of you that we exist. So ask away, kick off your shoes, and be at home.

Oh yeah, if you see the abbreviation BIOB, it stands for Blame It On Bernie. Bernie is a loveable old chap who has been designated the source of all problems. And this is not at all limited to computer problems. So if you run out of printer ink, burn the roast, or even if your car doesn't start, BIOB!

Good Morning All,
Thanks to RHPConsult, I now have everything connected. I found the specs for my 6100/60AV at The Apple Museum:
Ports: Ethernet: (1) AAUI 15
Modem: N/A
I don't know what any of this means; I am simply copying the information, in response to some board members questions. I have another question which I will post later.
God Bless and thanx.gif
Oops: I forgot to add:
Memory:
RAM Type: 72 pin SIMM
RAM on Motherboard: 8 MB
Minimum RAM: 4 MB
Maximum RAM: 72 MB

Mrs. L. What you'll need is this Adapter. smile.gif

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=25436

Do you know if you already have one?

If not. A Little Bird said one is available for you. smile.gif

This will allow a Cable/DSL Ethernet hook up to your computer.

About the RAM.

Have you started up the machine yet?

When you do.

"To find out information about a Macintosh, go to the Apple                        menu in the upper-left corner of the screen. The first option                        should say "About this Macintosh" or "About this Computer".

At the About screen, you can find the System Software or Mac OS version as well as the amount of Built-in Memory."

wallbash.gif Dear All:
It seems I will have two physical problems: 1) Cancer; 2) Insanity - if I can't get this "old Mac" to function.  I finally got the Printer plugged into the correct port?  The lights all flashed and I was feeling quite proud of myself.  Now, understand, you are dealing with a novice, here.  The 320 Laserwiter has no buttons to manually print anything. It connects directly to the Processor.  I cannot find any information on how to get it to print.  The previous owner has icons? set up on the screen.  I figured out how to open some of them. Something called Systems Alias, has Extensions, so I went into it looking for my Printer, and it is now telling me that the original Document could no be found for the 320 Laserwriter.  Heavy Sigh.
Any one have any idea what I did wrong? The printer seems ready to Print, its the System information that is holding me up.

Well, Good Morning, Kelly,
I went to the site, I did the Apple Menu selection for Chooser, I chose the 320 (had to find it first as it doesn't appear as a 320 selection, per se, and guess what - I got a Message: You have changed your current Printer. Please choose Page Set-Up... in all the open Applications.  OK?  I am now trying to understand where this Page Set Up is.  I do not want to click OK, until I know what I'm supposed to do with this.  Yikes! Where is the Page Set-Up located?   wallbash.gif
