Dear All,
Wish me well. I am off to my first Radiation Treatment.  For the next six weeks, five days a week, I will be getting zapped.  I understand from some who have gone before me, that Radiation makes you quite tired.  With that in mind, I will try to catch up with you all later, I hope.

QUOTE(MrsLop @ Jun 11 2003, 10:37 AM)
I still don't know what a modem is.

A modem is a device that connects your computer to a telephone line. Modulator-demodulator. I think.

Some modems (modi?) are external, and connected to the computer with standard telephone cable/wire/cord (you pick the term you like). Some are internal, and you can't see 'em, or there connectors. They "plug in" to a "slot" somewhere. Do you have Apple System Profiler in your Apple Menu? I think that will list a bunch of stuff that might include an internal modem, if present.

I'm not at my Mac now, and can't verify that, so if any of the above is wrong, someone with a better memory or who is sitting at a Mac can correct me. I just don't get the chance to come to TS very often at home and am forced to do it before work, or at lunch. At home I'm on dial-up (modem) but at work, we have DSL. That makes a difference.

Good luck! (I was still writing when you posted.)

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

By any chance is the person who gave you this system an acquaintance of yours and locally available??  Are all periperals (printer, modem) part of the original package given you or did they come from differant sources??

You will want to arrow over to your blinking apple icon and scroll to 'chooser' then release the mouse button.  If you do not see your current printer listed in the menu, you are missing the 'print driver'  not being on line for downloads could be a problem at this time.  It is still available through a site (I can't locate in my memory bank at the present but as macdrivermuseum.com - or something like that).  I can get back to you if you need to know.

I would suggest that you try not to master too many functions at the same time unless you are a voluminous note taker - - - get on-line first to master downloads to your desktop.  They can reside there for the moment and you can refer to them without printed hardcopies.  I have a feeling you will run the risk the dreaded 'screen freezes' with insufficient ram.  You mentioned, and I can verify that the 6100 was produced with 8 mb of ram on the motherboard.  You have extra ram slots that enable you to add 8, 16, 32 simms in 'pairs' of two.   Removing the case is a simple procedure - if for now other reason than to see what you have inside.

Before doing so - go back to the apple menu icon and lick on 'abouth this computer' or if you have a 'system profiler' click on it.  - In short, you really have to become familiar with what it is you have so we can help you identify what it is you will need to do to achieve your described needs and desires are.

You can do this - the cover has two tabs on the top rear.  With your thumbs on the tab locate them towards the ends of the slots - grasp behind and under the rear of the top cover - try pushing the lower case portion forward at the same time to relieve the pressure - then, try to lift the tabs slightly to unlock them.  After doing so, tilt the cover upwards and towards you at the same time - Volla! (You can refer to wwwkan.org to help you identify what it is you are looking at.)  E-mail me with any further questions if you think I can help more.

MrsLop, if you take on an old Mac AND radiation treatment, you are a STRONG WOMAN! You have all the best chanses to recover if you have just any tiny bit of the spirit we've seen here.

My thoughts will be with you... it's not a fun thing you're going through, but I hope the Mac thing is making up for some of it.  wub.gif

CyberPet Hello,
Thank you for your kind words.  I clicked on your link to MUGS, at Apple.  It is so tiresome getting around their site. I found several listings in my area, one of them turned out to be advertising for computers and parts.
There are two that interest me though, and I think I will be visiting one Monday evening.
I was very tired today after treatment.  I had to get some rest.  I am taking it one day at a time.

Good Evening,neokm,
After my first Radiation Treatment, I am too tired to do much.  I think I shall take your advice and not try to learn/do too much at once.   thanx.gif I am very grateful to you for all the time and effort you put into your last post.
P.S No the person was not a friend.  She was a student who left the country to return to her home overseas.
What I received:
Processor 6100/60AV,Monitor 14",Apple Keyboard II,Mouse,LaserWriter 320,all cables/wires for the above.  There is an Ethernet Port and another plugin openning for something that looks like a telephon handset  I was up at 7AM looking closely and writing and sketching all the opennings on the back of the processor.

clap.gif Good Evening All,
I just returned from Choir Practice and thought I would take a few minutes to bring you up to date.  I took the cover off my computer and took notes about what devices I have.  Well, I had to unplug everything in order to do so. By mere chance, the PRAM Battery died.  When I put it all back together and started up the computer the Monitor showed me a Black Screen.  Well, after Radiation Treatment I had my husband drive me to Radio Shack to buy another PRAM Battery.  IBack home again: followed a link that a TS member had supplied (directions on Battery ID  ,Removal and Replacement) and guess what happened - I got another Black Screen this time with a one to two second glimpse of my normal screen. After rturning the Monitor on and off several times, I tried securing the Monitor plug, disconnect. reconnect, several times.
At last, I tried adjusting the settings for Brightness and Contrast and I got my "normal" screen back.  I cannot tell you what a trauma today  was for me.  I thought I had broken something important. My hands were shaking and I was full of fears.  All's well, that ends well.  I can now begin to take notes on what I need to get my Computer connected to the internet so that I can download and print out all the information I need on Cancer Treatments
etc.. Thanks to all of you who propped me up when I fell down today, and assuaged all my fears with your encouraging words and great links and advice. thanx.gif

It's a program that makes your computer act as though it has more RAM. smile.gif

The previous owner must have installed it.

It's a good thing. smile.gif

Hello MrsLop ....

... It is Saturday afternoon here in the UK and I'm watching Cricket on TV.
Cricket is an English sport which all of our Colonies have adopted (except America ... hmmmmph!) and which they now (all) consistently beat us at with liberated abandonment!

The benefit of Cricket is that, because it is so slooooow, I can "surf" at the same time and not miss any of the Aaaaaaaction (!).

Anyway, as another Newbie, may I also WELCOME you here*?

Although the (other) contributors are far more knowledgeable than I am, I can confidently offer one piece of re-assurance -

"Your Mac may be a computer but, at least, it's friendly!
It isn't a 'PC' (sic) and you aren't committed to contribute to Mr. Gates' already over-inflated bank-balance."

Your Mac will let you be intuitive without causing problems. Don't fear it!

You have more-than-enough to be concerned with at the moment.

Best Wishes

David L.

*I tried to include the Welcome gizmo here.

MrsLop,

It seems to me that you are doing remarkably well with your "old mac".  You've made it print, you've replaced the battery...  You may not realize it yet, but you seem to have a knack for this.  Keep up the good work!

Good Afternoon Kelly,
I have had to log in three times since I returned to the Board.  What's up with that?

I went to a few of the links last night that you provided.  I especially liked the one about Low End Macs.  It gives me something to aspire to!

  thanx.gif

On a different link, I found RAM info.  There was if I recall:
EDO, SIMMS, Parity.

The EDO is very inexpensive compared to SIMMS (F??) don't recall the designated initials.
Apparently.  This is a big thing with some TS members, telling me I need more RAM space for my computer.  I guess it makes a big difference in download time?

What type of RAM should I be looking at?  SIMMS as it is original to my Mac?

The type/# of pins on my board are, 72.

According to kan.org, removing and installing  new RAM is the easiest thing I will ever do, besides maybe, removing the cover and replacing the PRAM Battery.

Should I even bother or would the money be better put towards a "newer" Computer?

Thanks in advance, for your help.

Hello David and Dan,
Thank you both for the welcome.

Dan,
I have had about five days of total immersion into all things Mac related.  I have always been "Mrs Fixit" around my home, out of necessity not choice.  Perhaps that has helped with the hands on things I need to do to get my System connected to the Internet.  TS members have helped me to understand what my particular system needs, why it needs it, and what to do about it.

This can be a very expensive pastime I gather.  I resisted all things computer for a very long time.  It has taken life threatening illness to prod me out of my cave into this modern age so that I might learn more about my illness and help myself recover and get well.

It is both exhilirating and challenging and definitely an adventure.

If I had to describe myself, I am more like Tolkiens' characters a real Hobbit.

Stay tuned for "The Adventures of MrsLop in Mac Land"

Two of these would do you very well. smile.gif

64MB (16x32) 72 Pin SIMM 60ns 2K Refresh $17.95

http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm...tem=OWC72PS64MB

Your kind of computer needs to have these installed in pairs.

So you would need two.

This would be the best thing you could do for that machine.

Upgrade an old machine or get a newer one is always a conundrum. smile.gif

Since you're not on line yet.
