DJ Lincoln:

I believe that another of Mrs.Lop's new best friends has anticipated the merits of William's little book for her and it's already on its way . . . o'er a few hundred miles of land, rather than through theair over the North Atlantic.   biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

You are kind to offer to participate, however.

Good Evening All,

In todays post I received
a box filled with CD's

and books:

1- The Mac Is Not A Typewriter
Author: Robin Williams

2- Mac secrets
Authors: David Pogue & Joseph Schorr

3- The Macintosh Bible
7th Edition
Author: Sharon Zardetto Aker

The Cd's

Macworld Mac Secrets 5th Edition
MacO.S.7.6, OS 8,OS 8.5,OS 8.6.

I was so excited that I went from one to the other, to the next and back again!

The CD's have me a bit concerned.  I don't know how to use them yet.

I am looking forward to working with you - all my frinds at TS on getting my "newer" Mac, getting it Upgraded and Online.

In Joyful Anticipation of All the Good Things to Come -

A Very Good Evening to You, David,

Thank you so much for your kind offer.

Please read my "Good Evening All" post.

I love to read. It has been some time since I have had read for meaning.
Not since my college days
have I had such technical reading to do.  It was Physics, I believe. I worked so hard for that course and I got an A!
And that was with four small children who seemed to be permanently attached to my left leg.
Now, I am not so sure that the brain will cooperate and function as well.
I seem to have lost confidence in my abiities.
I have always wanted to travel to England - among other places.  I became interested in the Victorian Era and have travel books that have wonderful pictures of all the places of interest.
Alas, I have never been there.

One of my nephews moved from New York to Wimbledon,UK and loves it.

I hope that you will stop by often to see how I am progressing and to say "Hello." thanx.gif

Good Morning Mrs. Lop,

(I assume you were sleeping when I wrote this... wink.gif )

Just wanted to tell you that the Mac OS CDs with the numbers are probably something you will put aside for now. They are versions of the operating system, of which you now are running 7.5.2, I think. The Mac that is on its way will have a later version on it, either 8.6 or possibly 9. In any case the 8.6 would be the one to keep very safe as it is the latest of the bunch you have.

The CDs would be needed if ever you have a problem whereby you can't start up the machine from the system that is already installed on the computer's hard drive. The CD has a system on it that will allow the machine to start up. It's very handy for troubleshooting. In addition, should anything major ever occur to the installed system, you can reinstall it from the CD. Sort of like putting a new carburetor in a car (though today, electronics have replaced that too). It allows the applications and files to interact and makes the whole thing work together as efficently as possible.

I know this sounds so daunting to try to understand all at once so just take it slow and read the basics in the books. Pretty soon it will all begin to make sense.

Evening krissel,
I wondered where you had been.  Busy posting to other topics?
I assume you have read my other posts.

No, sleep is not going to come easily tonight.
After all, it's not often I celebrate Christmas in June.

I have been reading and trying to understand the concept of how to upgrade from the "old" mac System 7.5.3 Revision 2.

What do you think about my using the "old" mac to practice on upgrading to say the 8.6?  Will I lose all the files, folders and icons, currently showing.  Also, do I need to install ALL of these to get to the latest version - the 8.6?
I don't know if I have enough memory to do this.
But , if I could it would give me the confidence needed to do this again when the 4400 / 200 arrives.

Oh, BTW, I posted to the other Topic that we were discussing last night: Help I Can't Post..  MSN giving me less service for the same price.  I didn't remember some of the specifics until later.  By then you had vanished and so had Dreambird.

Great hearing from you again!

Bernie. . .My hat is off to you ( notworthy.gif ), despite all the mischief you've caused over the years (what other web site has "BIOB"?) !   biggrin.gif  Also, congrats on your 4000th post!

MrsLop, have you looked at the number of views that this post has garnered?  I don't EVER remember seeing anything like this!  Obviously, a lot of people are keeping an eye on you, and your progress in your new "endeavor"!  Keep this up, and you're going to be offering advice instead of soliciting it. . .We're going to have to grant you an honorary "professorship". . .Who knows where this road will take you?  I hope that you're enjoying this as much as we are, and I thank you for the feeling of warmth that this experience is giving me, since having you join us.  I don't know if what I meant is coming through, because I always look forward to checking into TS, each day, but THIS really has been something extraodinary, and it wouldn't have happened without YOU (and Bernie). . .

Well Evening, beacher,

Now, you wouldn't want to go and make me cry, would you?  I'm just a sentimental fool, and I cry when I'm happy or sad.

I have as your village elder stated "been adopted."

I have lived in a quasi self imposed imprisonment due to the Chemotherapy Treatments I received.  I had to stay out of crowds, away from children, to avoid catching germs.  A cold germ could have killed me.  Chemotherapy destroys good cells, as well as Cancer Cells

The good news is the Chemotherapy is over and I can do all the going out that I want.

Since coming to TS, I have been overwhelmed by the welcome that I have received.  The generosity of spirit, kindness, all manner of help, including gifts have all been so utterly fantastic!

I am ever humbled by this board and very grateful!

Hey, Bern . . . IAWBeacher

(MrsLop, that's translated as I Agree With . . . whomever)

I'm suggesting that BIOB should have a companion acronym for our SoCalif Pal . . .

How 'bout COBTGID? thumbup.gif

Translation: Count On Bernie To Get It Done!

Sounds good to me.

Another interesting milestone: MrsLop joined TS on June 10 . . . via WebTV, no less. Her post-count now exceeds 112!  clap.gif  That's gotta be a record and, let's hope, serves as a useful model for all you lurkers out there.

Come in and stay awhile

Hello Mrs. Lop,

Been busy myself lately so haven't posted as much as I'd like. In fact this will be quick...

Your idea of practicing on the older machine is excellent. If you can keep that one running as well as the new one you can practice all kinds of things on it knowing you aren't going to mess up the "good one".  wink.gif  You will also be able to compare the speed of the new to the old and see how different machines respond. When the time comes to practice an upgrade/install on the old machine let us know and we'll walk you through it.

There are three wasy to upgrade. One is to wipe everything off the drive and start fresh, the second is to do a "clean install"of the system only and the third is to just upgrade the basic system leaving everything else untouched. We'll explain this more when you are ready to try it.

In the meanwhile, read and rest.   smile.gif

Well sometimes anyway.  doh.gif
Mrs. Lop. I forgot that the morning before work. I transfered a 4 gig ATA drive into the 4400 which had Os 8.6 . The original  2gig drive had  Os 9.1
 Silly me.  wallbash.gif
