I have boxes of things Apple Mac that I am not quite sure what to do with.  What about a Community Area where folk can post their threads with details of what they have and, for the price of postage, or real payment, want to sell?

It might be a good way to recycle all those US plugs I know I will never use!  Thinking.gif

So, Administrators, what do you think?

Great idea or what?

There's already a great site that I use. Probably has a much larger audience than TS. LEM-Swap for buying & selling Mac stuff. http://groups.google.com/group/lemswap

I like the idea of recycling to people I "know" if at all possible.  It just makes it more personal, which of course is utterly selfish of me.

Frances,

I don't call that selfish at all FWIW.

Actually all you need do is post a list of what you have and ask people to contact you via email if they wish to claim something. It's been done many times. Unfortunately it often costs more to send than it is worth, but someone may want what you have and will pay the shipping.

In fact I was just thinking the same thing the other day as I was going through all my computer stuff that I need to dump... Thinking.gif

We have a local Yahoo "FreeCycle" page and Ive given away lots of stuff thru this. Mac stuff, kids bikes, boat stuff, sports equip, just about everything. It has to be free, and you also can post for wanted stuff.

Also I have donated lots of stuff to our local schools. I live near the gal who runs the graphic arts dept at our local high school, and she will take anything from MacWorld magazines to software, and anything that works well. Not too outdated though.
Some of her students are needy, so anything that will help them is good.
There is also a retired doctor who fixes PC and Windows stuff and donates it to the school too.

That is all fine and dandy but up here I am the only person with a radius of 200 miles who has a Mac (other than the other sheep who all have peecees!)  I could put Mac stuff up for sale/freecycle but no one would know what to do with it.

I was just thinking a Recycle Section might be nice here on Techsurvivors between friends.

I will go for that as well, remember Kelly?  I mailed him an older Pismo powerbook that I hadnt any more use for a long time ago.
I cant remember his name, but there was a youngster from Long Island who was with us here for a while, he was collecting old Macs and would have driven quite a way to pick up some of the older heavier ones.
So a swap amongst us is a good idea.

BTW, Parker, want to check in and let us know how you're doing?

Yup, Parker was his ID here. I forgot his real name and his website, and not going to bother to search this Mac to find it now, as we are busy.
And he was collecting old Macs.
Hope he signs in, as he would love to be part of a swap.

Maybe I wasn't clear.  You can post here at TS if you have somethings to give away. No problem. We just don't want to have a classified section where money is involved.  Since we are nonprofit we want to avoid any connection to paid transactions that could go bad or be responsible as the middleman.

As long as the exchange arrangements are made privately via email or PM it's OK. smile.gif

What about a seperate forum area (Community, Technical, Recycle, for example) where folk can put up their item available for the price of postage plus, say, a trade.

Everyone lives all around this globe and you all have different stuff specific to your area.

Someone sent me a bag of wild rice from their neck of the woods in exchange for a photo and that was brilliant!  I would love that kind of trade.  You know, chocolate covered macadamia nuts for a copy of the X-files game.  Stupid stuff but packages that make you smile when you open them or just go "hmmmm" and then have to look it up on the internet to find out what on earth you would do with Maple syrup butter tablet (I ate it!).

Will bring it up with the other admins (who apparently haven't been following this thread) and get back to you.  salute.gif

Hi Frances,

We're working on it, attempting to build a consensus one way or the other!

In the meanwhile, have you seen this?

This is the latest page (brought to our attention by Highmac).

One clear difference is that they are a commercial Forum. We are all volunteer and not-for-profit, which makes putting in an area like that in our Forum subject to much discussion.

So, we are discussing your very good idea to see if we might be able make it happen in some form.

Best,

Thank you very much!

The way I see it is someone offers up, say a keyboard that is spare.  They put up the spec and where they would be prepared to send it.  For something like a huge monitor, it obviously is not going to wing its way across the pond.

Then folk can pm/message if they are interested.  Find out how much postage and packing will be, pay that by Paypal or another agreed method, and the item is sent off.

In return, the receiver will then pack up a parcel of local things that might make the person laugh/smile or go hmmmmm and send it off to say thank you!

The parcel should not equate the value of the hardware/software sent but is a token gesture as the main aim is really to recycle something, not to make money and to leave both parties happy!
