What does a SuperDuper backup file look like?!
« on: June 15, 2010, 03:41:56 PM »
I don't even see one, even after doing a manual backup that took only a few minutes and reported no problems.

I just updated my Brother software and now I can access the scanner!!! rant.gif I swear I'll never do another Brother update!!! Anyway, I swapped some Time Machine files back on the System drive with no help, then I decided to see what SD could do. Unfortunately, there are two slight problems.
    1. I have it scheduled to make a backup each night. doh.gif So much for going back to retrieve a damaged file from yesterday...if it was damaged before the backup, the original is gone. The Sandbox seems like a better approach, but it's too late for that and I don't have a "blank, erasable' partition laying around...
    2. I don't see any sign of any 'back up' files except the Time Machine and the 1Password variety!
Surely it's not a 'hidden' file since the 'help' says all that's required is to select the "external drive or mount the backup image, and drag the [desired] file back." dntknw.gif

There is no image file and the drive is already mounted, that's where it is supposed to write the backup and that's where I've been looking. Absolutely nothing created/modified on Jun 14, 2010 on that or the other partition on that drive. doh.gif

I, apparently can't see the 'tree' for the forest! inspect.gif blush-anim-cl.gif

Um, Jim...my backup drives look exactly like my boot drive. It's not a backup - it's a clone. Ergo, there is no "backup" file. The file modified or created date and time will be the same as they are on the original - this is an exact clone. So, if you updated and installed that Brother software before the 14th, you won't have any activity noted on the 14th for that file. Whatever activity took place on that file will be the same as it was on your original (until you modified it via the Time Machine file, that is). If you do a manual backup now, SuperDuper will now copy/clone the changed file to your backup.

As for the backup issue, that's why one has rotating backups. In my case, I have one nightly backup and one weekly backup drive. So, if something gets bunged up and I don't notice it immediately, I have up to a week to notice it and retrieve the original file (or clone the entire drive if it's a really bad mess) from weekly backup. I also have a Time Machine backup on another drive. Just call me the Department of Redundancy Department. smile.gif

wallbash.gif doh.gif blush-anim-cl.gif Of course! And it's really not much use, since last midnight... rolleyes.gif I'll have to keep trying the TM backup.

I created the confusion myself by keeping other stuff, including the Time Machine and 1Password backups on that same drive...even throwing on some various, "Where can I park this thing for a while (and never get around to storing it properly!)" files. Oh well, don't scan that much each week but I really don't need this aggravation this week (it only has two and a half days in it eek2.gif ), especially!!! rant.gif
