The reason you don't hear about this with other carriers is that no other phone is under such demand.
All iPhone models are sold out for first day delivery. I'll bet Verizon would love to be able to say that about any of the phones they offer.
That said, by now they should realize they need to set up more server capability. On the other hand, it does guarantee a lot of media coverage.
