Kernal panic
« on: June 12, 2003, 03:28:38 PM »
I suppose  some of you have experienced the dreaded screen that says in about half a dozen languages 'you need to shut down and restart your machine" Pogue's advice is remove all non Apple items and then rinstall them.
The only item that is non Apple is the broadband USB modem itself and the suppliers have already replaced the first modem supplied by them.
Any ideas?
Must dash to local  hostelry ........am thirsty.

Hi Kelly,
On average at least a couple of times a day. The G4 (mirrored doors) is six months old and the problem has been apparent since I went down the broadband route three months ago. I was of the impression that perhaps it was a modem (Alcatel) problem and was advised to download the latest drivers, with this  done there has been no improvement. Is there a common modem drivers problem with OS X 10.2.6?
My ISP (Pipex) who I have my monthly broadband contract with (having renewed the modem) suggest that having renewed the modem and  I have renewed the drivers perhaps I should think about replacing the modem with a router.
In your opinion Kelly would this cure the problem?
George.

I don't know George. It might. smile.gif

I do know that OS X can be "sensitive"  to hardware.

Around here good DSL Routers can be had for $25 after rebate.

A Router is generally a good idea for the Firewall anyway. smile.gif

You can't replace a modem with a router...you need both, unless you meant replace the connection to the computer with a router which is a good idea provided you can find a router which accepts a USB modem connection.

If your ISP can provide you with an Ethernet modem, than get that first and not only save youself some money, but it will confirm that the USB modem is the issue in the first place. Although, my personal opinion is that probably it is the USB modem causing the kernel panics.

Thanks to you KPS and Kelly things have moved on in that a PC (shhhhh) friend of mine dropped by bearing his ethernet modem/router which on hearing of my problem promptly set up the router on my G3 and within five minutes it was up and running.
I was very impressed so much so that I will be ordering one for myself.
Thanks boys
George.
