Maybe that's what a "force reboot" is supposed to do? dntknw.gif

I don't quite follow. What is the "open firmware sound"? Is it anything described in Power On Self-Test Beep Definition? Have you tried resetting PRAM?

If you need to force a shutdown, it might be safer to do it via Terminal (Applications/Utilities), if possible. Launch Terminal. Type sudo shutdown -h now and press Return. Type your administrator password and press Return (you won't see anything happening but it will be working nonetheless). The computer will now shut down.

Tried pram, and mother board reset...
Sounds like programming mode , (long tone )or  Power on self test
Happens sometimes among the resets
Can't launch terminal cause i'm on 9.2.2 ...hope it has nothing to do whith the Fastmac processor upgrade sad.gif
Before going to bed i'm running memtest in single user mode... where should i find the results tomorrow?

Thinking.gif I have had this happen to me when an "Open Firmware" upgrade went astray and when my triggering "Open Firmware" didn't happen somehow!  Don't know which it was in your case but pushing the power button with everything unplugged and then plugging everything back in (whatever this is called) fixed things on the Intel iMAC and leaving the battery unplugged for a little bit (not a long bit) fixed things on the Powermac G4. dntknw.gif It enough to make you mad as a rabbit3.gif (to coin a phrase)!

Did you upgrade the firmware in the G4?  It should have 4.2.8.

Are you dropping into Open Firmware on reboot or just getting the sound?

Here's an interesting thread with a guy who had a display that had corroded wiring leading to the on/off button. He disabled it and solved his problem. Take a look and see if it could apply to you.

Yes the firmware is update... i'm just getting the sound sometimes, as i'm rebooting from the display maybe there's something wrong whith that lighted button too.

As i had many trouble  i  installed  an 9.2.2 fresh system on the DA but it freeze , (boot ok whith extensions of)

Than installed conflict catcher .... all day rebooting boredom.gif sweatingbullets.gif

found many  inits  conflicting (iomega / all quicktime...)is it normal for a fresh install to have so many conflicts at boot ...???

GR,

Did you do a "clean install"? Is this with an install of OS X, or on it's own?

Take a look  here:

I don't know if this addresses your problems, but take a look.

Best,

ADSR: Is the version of the Open Firmware "correct" for the version of OS you're running?  Is it the correct OS for example?  Is it as "up-to-date" as you can get for the OS?  If you are trying to put OS X onto OS 9.nn or the other way around OS 9.nn onto an OS X system you might have a problem in a "nutshell" right there!  I wish you well with this; let use know what your solution is!  If you are using the dual OS 10.4 and 9.2.2 maybe you need to try it "again" starting up from the 10.4 side (it being the newest) and just try the "update/upgrade" for the Open Firmware again!  Some people treat the 9.2.2 as if it were in isolation and don't try things from the 10.4 side!

OS 9.2.2  and OSX  have each their own   partition.

The software i use don't run in the  9.2.2 classic install by OSX,

Firmware is  4.2.8f1

Found strange that the new install had so many  problems at first boot even whith mac OS base inits...?

So i came back  to a  SD Back up from the MDD...seems more stable , for the softwares but now i sometimes get a Quit from finder , allowed 512 k system heap whith conflict catcher is it enough, or something else to do

Can you just let it sleep to avoid having to reboot?

After trying many CC set ups,  renaming some inits, allowing 800k to system heap, seems to be ok  now
