Anyone know about a good source of info about Facebook?
« on: July 16, 2010, 11:02:27 PM »
I'm not trolling for Facebook connections; it almost seems as if it is probably hardest not to add friends or connections or whatever.  I've only done it in self-defense as much of my own family have started to hang out there.  But I feel like I need a sort of set of rules to build a "firewall" between all of the friends I've suddenly gained and the personal wall that I've now got!  I'll leave it there for now because of the more complex questions that I've got to formulate.

I don't know of any one site that could give you all the info you seem to want (but that doesn't mean there isn't one out there). FB changes with the wind and it's hard to keep up with their security settings, privacy settings, how-does-this-work settings, etc.

It would help if you could tell us exactly what you want your "rules" and "firewall" to do at FB. Then maybe I could point you to a site that explains things.

Procedures change so often that I doubt any single outside source will be of much use. Your best bet will be reading through the help center and carefully setting all your account preferences.

If what you really want is to get rid of "friends" (ha ha) without them knowing it or being able to see what you're doing, the best way is to go to their profile page, scroll down on the left side, and click "Remove from Friends" (right above the Share button). They won't be notified, and probably the only way they'll figure it out is if they miss your posts on their Home page. If they try to refriend, just don't respond.

And, good luck! Plus, you should remember that FB os not in business to help you make friends or stay in contact with anyone. Their main, primary, guiding goal is to make as much money as possible. Any benefits you may gain from their endeavors are purely coincidental. Likewise, "security" to them means making sure no one else gets to their information about you unless they pay for it. But, once they pay, their not only have no control, they have no real interest. Every "app" you use there gathers information about you. They now have apps that will gather information about you, even if it's only your "friend" using them.

Hmmmmm. I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm not sure that what you heard is what I actually meant!

Another option is to "hide" certain people. I also hide all the applications as I don't use them. Hiding the game apps means some of my friends/family never appear on my home page (wall), since all they do is play those games -- but that's their choice and my choice. I don't accept any of the gifts either. Sometimes to find the menus for these things you have to move your mouse around on the right hand side of posts, and then you'll see the "invisible" menu button.

Also, I don't post anything I don't want the entire world to know. I tried using the "very private only people on this list can read this" option, and discovered that my post still wound up on a cancer page -- thanks for FB's "connection" thing where they use keywords to "share" your posts. So I only write stuff I don't mind the whole world knowing.

Kimmer, I believe that your option keeps their stuff from showing up on your page but doesn't remove them from being your friend. From what I've been told by (actual) friends who use Facebook much more than I do, just clicking on "hide" will not stop your stuff from appearing on their page.

What I'd like to figure out is how to get rid of pages I've previously liked.

dboh, thanks for the heads up. I will look into that. Family I'll keep on ignore (nothing but potty mouth posts); but perhaps some friends will have to go.

Go to your profile > INFO > Likes and Interests > click edit

Near bottom look for Show other pages and click that link.

Then click Remove Page for any links/pages you want to remove.

I gave up on them too, they change stuff, and some things that should be easy are not easy.
Plus they have some privacy issues.
I have some tutorials for FB, but since I dont use it any more, I havent tried any.
I had to use them for high school reunion stuff and a bit more, but I havent logged on for months. Nor have I had any more 'invites' from legit or non-legit people.
I made 3 blogs instead, they are much more 'secure' and our extended family whereever we are, can check in to our blogs and make comments or add pictures.
My old one is for family pictures, one for travel and old stuff, and my new WP one is for my classes and pictures and fun stuff.

Thanks. I got rid of a few. There's one that is showing up under Activities (even though all I did was click Like). I can't find a way to get rid of it. I guess I'll just have to hide it.

I might have been saved from my own excesses if I could have read some of the timely advice above before I signed up for the second time.  Originally I signed up with a different email address that I don't even have any more and a different avatar name because at that time you didn't want to use your own name!  A friend or two have said "no kids" and maybe they're right; maybe some variation of this unless I just limit myself by befriending actual friends and family.   dntknw.gif

That's about as safe as you can get. But it won't stop FB from collecting you as  'friend' of anyone else in your list...and vice versa. Of course, if you limit yourself to 15 - 25 people, why not just use email? You can send it to all of them at once or create groups of certain ones or just a couple at a time and most email apps can keep related messages together, unlike a wall with constantly dropping the last message and just keeping them in chronological order, regardless of the topic. dntknw.gif Oh well, too each his own... smile.gif

What continues to surprise me is that I keep hearing, "Well, they already know everything about me!" and "I don't care what they learn about me!" I suppose these are the same people who will download anything suggested by a web page and will automatically open what ever comes down the poke, be it an ".exe" file of an email. rolleyes.gif Then, of course, they will complain about their AV software slowing their machines and wonder why...assuming they even have AV software that is "up-to-date." wacko.gif

ABD - I'm not exactly sure I'm worried about antivirus software but I guess that it's far from impossible.  I'm worried about the collection of personal and statistical data without checks and balances.  This was a real concern to me when I looked into a website that was auctioning off a Macbook Pro (Intel Dual Core, apparently the latest) and what they wanted you to do was buy in "shares" of bids (at $1.50 apiece) towards a timed auction (26 hours or so left) on this item and it all looked and seemed so seamless and automatic that I almost was entering the auction before I realized I had.  Anyway I backed out of where I was and went on to find emails from them indicating I needed to confirm and that they seemed to know I was a Facebook member even if I hadn't said so.  This is a comedy of errors because I used my Yahoo login name (not password) and it is what I used for my Facebook login name.  People like me could probably use a keeper!  This is, I believe a personal wake up call that I need to reign in my enthusiam for technological gambits that are lurking out there in the bushes. I also managed to push a button for changing the password on their site three times without scrolling down and reading the entry button for the screen action!

What does anyone else think?  Even Tacit would have a great opinion about this and I would like to hear it!  (I could almost put up a nationwide 800 number rolleyes.gif and do a phone poll or something!

I moved this comment to a different topic ( http://www.techsurvivors.net/forums/index....showtopic=23095 ) and really kind of expanded on my original comment!  Thanks the XABD in advance for his good humor; it's too hot to stay serious!   rolleyes.gif
